In a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times, director and accused race-baiter Zack Snyder not only shared some of his thoughts about his upcoming Superman film, but he also demonstrated an abiding love for the adjective "awesome."
Snyder wants all to know that his upcoming superhero film, scripted by David S. Goyer and tentatively titled Man of Steel, will be not related to any previous Superman flicks.
"Literally, the one thing that everyone can start to think about is that we're making a movie that finally goes with the approach that there's been no other Superman movies," Snyder said. "If you look at Batman Begins, there's that structure: there's the canon that we know about and respect, but on other hand there's this approach that pre-supposes that there haven't been any other movies. In every aspect of design and of story, the whole thing is very much from that perspective of 'Respect the canon but don't be a slave to the movies.'"
Besides Briton Henry Cavill being set as Clark Kent/Superman, the only character cast so far is Clark's adoptive mother, Martha Kent, who is to be played by Diane Lane. Hopefully, farm wife Martha won't be transformed into a cougar by the extremely attractive Lane. When quizzed about future casting, Snyder opined, "There's more to come and I think it's consistent in its . . . awesomeness."
When asked about collaborating with producer Christopher Nolan, Snyder said, "Chris is awesome. He's super-respectful but super-helpful, too. You can't imagine a more generous [collaborator] . . . once he sort of got what I want to do with it, he was like, 'OK,' and once he said, 'You know what, that's awesome,' now he's 100%. If I say, 'What do you think of this?' he's like, 'That's awesome.'"
So, take heart, Superman fans. It appears all is awesome in Metropolis. Now, if they can just find a wicked cool Lois Lane…
Officially now, Costner is Pa Kent. And you know what? I can totally see that.
I have a lot of hope in Snyder...he is not always perfect, but dammit, he hits it out of the park plenty. And he seems to GET Superman-including the potential problems. Singer seemed to be in love with the problems, thinking they were strengths.
(and yet, as tough as I am on Superman Returns? I own it in both Blu-Ray and DVD)
