Debra Granik's thriller Winter's Bone is probably going to win an Oscar. Take that, Natalie Portman!
Winter’s Bone has seven nominations, including best feature, best cinematography, best director, best screenplay, and acting nominations for Jennifer Lawrence, Dale Dickey, and John Hawkes. Winte'rs Bone was also The 2010 Sundance Grand Jury Prize winner and Best Feature winner at the Gotham Awards in New York City this year.
Night Catches Us, the 2010 thriller directed by Tanya Hamilton, is also nominated for Best First Feature.
The 2011 Spirit Awards happen on February 26th, 2011 in Los Angeles, California.
In Debra Granik's Winter’s Bone (read our gushing review), Lawrence portrays Ree Dolly, a 17 year old teenager trying to track down her father, who put their house up for his bail bond and then disappeared.
Okay, Black Swan is also nominated for Best Feature and will probably win an Oscar, too.
Both Jennifer Lawrence and Natalie Portman put in such stellar performances for both roles - I'd be hard pressed to pick a winner out of the two, honestly.
Portman's role was arguably much more physically demanding, and perhaps that should count for something. But it would be awesome to see an upcoming actress like Lawrence win a prestigious award - she definitely deserves the attention!
