Please, women only reply to this thread.

Women, what do you want from these forums? How do you want to feel when you are here? What kind of discussions do you want us to be having?

A suggestion made before was that it would be nice to 'spotlight' a woman forum member once ina while on the main site.

Are there other things you'd like to see? New forum categories that aren't here?

any and all suggestions welcome.

Jess, I'd love that, but how many of us are in the same town?

We can do that anyway, though. Wink

Oh, sorry, I read this forum by accident. Thought it might answer an age old question for me. Happy

Heidi, you might consider changing that title.

I don't know, Heidi...I really like the forum. It's hard to find a decent welcoming place for women, and you've created a great place. I like the idea of spotlighting members. Pretty-scary is informative, fun, encouraging, and it brings women all over the world together!

I like talking about food and cats. I should probably be posting on Martha Stewart forums.

Food, check. Cats, check.

I also like talking about music, funny stuff, and women doing cool stuff.

I like that too. And I'm fairly certain that I'll be dressing my cats up like Zoro when I go home. I'll be a female doing something... not *cool*- but something. I may come out with some cool bloody scratches, though...

Tristan, are you one of those kinds of guys who, like at family things when all the women are off talking and there's just that one husband/boyfriend who pops in? (and I say that with 100% love)

LOL You're so funny...

Hey.

Okay, so admittedly I'm not really a forum kind of person. I like the idea of them in theory, but when it comes down to the practice of it, I just never have an idea what to contribute (I've been trying to visit once a week, since you mentioned that there weren't enough women getting involved, because I want to be an active member of our community.)

But if like there could be a weekly topic posted someplace clearly - like a specific question directly related to horror: i.e. what is the biggest mistake novices make when making a horror film? or what's the best female heroine in a horror film, or what's the most sexist horror film of all time and why? or some such thing, I'd totally dig getting involved in that sort of discourse.

cheers,
Devi

I would second what Devi has said here-- I love the idea of a forum as a community (and a resource) but don’t seem to follow through on participating.

Ironically, some of the problem may be feeling awkward about posting when one does not post much-- and one ends up in a vicious circle of not posting because one does not post much.

It’s also time though. I think we all have a lot of demands on our time, a lot of things we feel we should be doing, or mean to do, or have to do, or would like to do… and we are trying to balance all that with time spent on line. Work, family, home, errands, exercise, and, hopefully, having time to sit down and watch some (horror) movies-- it gets to be a real juggling act.

I like Devi’s notion of a weekly in-depth question/discussion on a particular topic.

And, to be honest, I’d be more interested in having participation limited to posts by women.

There are jazillions of horror sites and blogs on the net, chock full of the opinions of men. And those are valuable and important opinions, and I enjoy and appreciate the contributions of men, and love my horror guy friends.

However, while my options for hearing the opinions (and quips) of men in horror are many, my options for looking at/discussing something horror-related through the eyes of other women, or with a feminist interpretation … that gets a bit more limited. I have to work harder to find that type of fellowship, that perspective, and that sort of peer mentoring/support.

This site is THE site for women in horror. When I read here, I am looking for and hoping to see news and perspectives that I won’t see at the other sites out there.

I’d love to read more about women in horror. I’d love to read more perspectives on trends in horror. I love reading what women are doing, what films they are writing/directing/producing. I would love to hear about what fans are doing out there too. I’d love to be inspired to create. But I think I need to be able to find and access this information quickly.

So, two more suggestions--

At the top of this thread Heidi posted, “Please, women only reply to this thread.” Which seemed clear and unambiguous. The replies from men did add levity to the thread, and, as I have a house o’ cats here, I do love seeing cats. But it did not really contribute to a conversation about what women want from this site… and it took three days to bring the conversation back around to the original topic. When we go back to the demands on our time/time is short problem that many are facing, I wonder if some women walk away from the idea of becoming involved in a thread or discussion when they devolve. It can take time to craft a thoughtful reply to a thread; people want to feel doing so is time well-spent, that their reply will contribute to discourse. If you decide to enact Devi’s suggestion for a weekly discussion thread, it might be helpful to explore taking steps in that thread to keep the dialogue focused and on topic, and see if that widens the audience at all.

Second suggestion--

Does Pretty Scary have a Facebook fan page?

Something else that might make it easier on folks with limited time-- posting headlines of stories/threads on a Facebook page.

I do aim to go through my Facebook feed each day. I’ve found I really like it when I get a heads up from a board or web site about a topic. It’s like having the headlines delivered to me, and I can sort through to find the topics of particular interest to me. When it is something that catches my eye, I do use the link then and head over to check it out-- and generally end up peeking around at some other subjects while I am there. (Mitchell Wells at Horror Society does this, and I’ve found it very useful.)

I also find this makes it easy to share news and links with friends who I know would be interested in the story.

Hope this is of help!

Maybe you could have articles or interview female horror directors?

Hey Julie, we have many articles and interviews up on the main section of the site!

Elizabeth and Devi - great suggestions and good points.

I think we should start weekly topics. And I think we should gear threads to staying on topic. Great input!

Elizabeth, we have great guys here who give us awesome input and in a strange way, balance us out sometimes. What are we without diversity?

The weekly topic is a good idea, especially if it is about a female-related horror issue!

I second Ash on this one. To be honest as far as I what I want from this place is a website that caters to showing off what us girls do in the industry and stuff that affects or appeals to us, which is what it already does with the news and reviews on the main page. I like to think that Pretty-Scary is a place that pipes up and says "Here's what Sally Made Today" because it's true in the industry that they often get over looked and we need a place like this to really showcase the things we do that otherwise go unnoticed or unprompted. Heidi does a pretty fucking good job of that, n'est?

That aside, as far as the forums go, I don't understand why we would segregate or have any issue at all with the guys. The guys here are awesome and they have been very good with promoting the site and being awesome pals. There's also the issue of Sexism. We have a website that's fighting for women's rights to be recognized in the industry as a symbol of equality but we're going to do battle against the guys who do come here, increase the site population and actually contribute? I think if we went down that route it's going to make a bit of a black mark against us. I'm always willing to fight for women's right's to be equal with men but we don't help matters when we try to exclude them unfairly on the basis that "This a girl site!" Yeah, there's a lot of boy opinions on the web, that's not the first time it's been brought up, but it's not as though the boys take over here and we can all hold our own I'm sure. When someone has a different opinion on something, it's always fine to disagree with them but when we start getting upset because that person doesn't have boobs I think we have a serious failure of the system. I don't think it's fair to expect guys to take us seriously and equally if we're going to chase them off and exclude them. If we want to be recognized for our work we need to be willing to infuse ourselves in with them, not run away screaming "Cooties". Equality and the fight against sexism goes -both- ways.

Also, on a side note, I don't think it was a guy that sidetracked the thread. Unless there's something about Annie that I'm not sure of... Tristan did post a video, but it wasn't what pushed the divide. Posts get side tracked here all the time and it's not a matter of which gender did it.

So I guess I'm a bit backwards in the sense that I do want to see participation from the boys on PS. I hate the idea of creating a bubble where only a girl's opinion is valued because the industry, fan base, etc consists of both. If we didn't get feedback from a guy now and then we'd never know how the other half thinks about the stuff we bring up here. It would be like an artist painting a picture and then only letting his closest fellow artists take a look at it because "I can get the common unwashed opinion any time I want by going outside, you select few are the only ones that matter! (Insert dreadful chorus laughter here.)" Or perhaps a company launching a new product that they expect the whole world to want to purchase however they only test it amongst the three creators who say "it's awesome". Even though the product is meant for mass consumption, failing to get feedback from as many sources as possible is silly. Sure, boys sometimes have different opinions, but they have opinions and they do matter, just as much as girl's do. This place is a website to show off girl stuff and to have guys be willing to hang out here and offer input is a really good thing because diversity kicks ass. We're all people, we can't stop sexism if we're going to keep promoting it ourselves.

Aside from the 'Group' on Facebook, you can sign up to get Pretty/Scary Headlines Feed on your Facebook Page by 'Following' the site through Facebook.

Just click this link:

http://apps.facebook.com/blognetworks/blog/prettyscary/

and 'follow', and the headlines will show up in your Facebook stream as they are posted on our main page here. Pretty nifty.

When I first started contributing to pretty-scary, It was the coolest website I had ever been on. There were forums pertaining to recently released films, old films, and just plain old films we like. I was super gung-ho about my contributions to the site, and reading others contributions as well. I haven't been on the website in a while; mostly because of school shit, and work-but also I feel like when it was women-in-horror, I felt like I had somewhere to go online that was just for me and people like me--boys too.
may not be relevant but that's what I feel.
