The Walking Dead Slows to a Crawl

The zombies on AMC's new series The Walking Dead may be walking a little slower than usual for a few months. Entertainment website Deadline Hollywood is reporting that writer/director/executive producer and all-around head honcho Frank Darabont has fired the entire writing staff for the hit show, which premiered last October.

It appears the house-cleaning, which even included Darabont's right-hand man, executive producer/writer Charles "Chic" Eglee, is the first (shambling) step toward the implementation of a new production model that relies on freelancers rather than a traditional writing staff. Apparently, this is a common practice in England on BBC-produced programs, but here in America (where we stopped doing things the British way quite a while ago) this is a radical departure — one that the Writer's Guild of America might well take issue with…and you don't want to piss off the WGA, my friends. (Pssst, Frank Darabont, you think your show is crawling along now? Wait till the WGA throws down one of its patented strikes. The last one stretched to 100 days and disrupted film and television production in Biblical proportions. True, the WGA will probably only send you a strongly worded letter, but just watch it, buddy. Don't give'em any excuses. You're on their radar now.)

Whatever the end result, the parties involved better get crackin'. The upcoming second season of The Walking Dead has been expanded to 13 episodes, more than double the first season. The plan is to premiere the second series (Brit-speak for "season") in October, which sounds like plenty of time. But there's that nasty preproduction process to contend with — and before that can commence, scripts need to be written by someone. Ahem. Consider this my application, Mr. Darabont, sir.

Word on the street is that Darabont is a big jerk. And by street I mean 'My facebook friends list'. This is also an excuse to pay people less and provide them with zero health care or any kind of job stability.

Some days I can't decide who I hate more; the unions, or the capitalist pigs. Today it's the pigs.

Ugh. Whenever something is going awesome, somebody has to go and sabotage it...even if it's it's own creator. Nice.

This is just a rumor for now, I hope it isn't true, because you're going to have a lot of pissed off fans if you fired the comic book creators that helped you write that thing. I will tell you that. Not to mention a nice representation of ladies in the writing force who were pretty good. I mean there were some issues I didn't like about the episodes, but they were still pretty good adaptation none the less.

If this is indeed true, than I will be quite sad because I was a real big fan of Frank.I could understand why Stephen King didn't give you "The Dark Tower" series to do because you're a jerk who seems to be a control freak as well. But right now I'm going to wait and reserve judgment . I would love to write for the second season, but as a fan I would feel like I would be backstabbing people and I could not do that. Not to mention, Frank would re-write your shit anyways as I hear he has been doing so I guess that's why he feels "Fuck it I don't need any writers their ideals suck! So I'm going to re-write all their scripts anyway! Because I can do whatever the fuck I want and treat people however the fuck I want because I'm Frank Darabont! So screw talking to writers, because that takes too much time because I'm so badass I have written movies that been nominated for Academy Awards so obviously I know what I'm talking about!"

Again this is just a rumor and I'm reserving judgment. Because really I do actually like him, but if it turns out be true boy you're going to have pissed off fangirls and fanboys like nobody's business I tell you what.

This person at av club talks sense, because other people thought the other episodes sucked, but I don't necessarily think it was the other writers.

Quote:

The problem is, people rationalize that this is a smart move because they think it'll improve the writing quality, without realizing that Darabont himself has done the bulk of the writing, and very little has been done by an actual in-house staff. So, if you are not satisfied with the quality of the writing, specifically Darabont's, you're a fool to think this is a good move.

Quote:

From the Deadline article, Darabont "ended up writing 2 of the first season's 6 episodes of Walking Dead - the pilot and the second episode - and co-writing/rewriting the other 4." Now, maybe he rewrote them because the writers sucked, or because he's extremely hubristic and made them worse. Who knows. The guy made The Green Mile AND Shawshank though, I'm thinking he's a little lacking in the creativity/originality department.

You know I never looked at it like that he has never really did anything on his own? Original I mean. Maybe dreamscape with Chuck Russell and some other stuff, but not a lot.

Quote:

But they clearly have the resources at this point to hire seasoned television writers/good writers in general. Plus Darabont has tons of other responsibilities show-wise. I don't know if staff writers are required to be salaried (I would assume "staff" means they are), but freelance or staff the WGA minimum is the same, and writers are generally not a show's greatest expense. Hubris, I'm thinking. "Creative control" is bullshit. He's the executive producer. He can fire any writer he doesn't like and write/rewrite any episodes he wants/veto any plots he doesn't like. Hubris.

That's what this really is about I think, a lot of people are talking about that its not a typical zombie movie/story too slow and etc. That's what they don't like about it and good the writers need to be changed. I mean there is some issues with writing, but not enough for me to be like "OK you're all fired gtfo I'm writing everything with some other people that may or not be paid that well anyway! But who the fuck cares I'm getting paid! That's what's most important!"

I mean your ratings are still good, why would you want to do that? I mean my biggest issue is too many characters that are just used for plot devices that aren't even in the comic book to begin with but that's just me. I'm just going to wait and see what Frank says and if the WGA gets after him, maybe it really is just a rumor.

It's not at all uncommon for a creator/exec producer/showrunner to redraft episodes that were written by staff writers, in order to keep a show's voice consistent. But this is something else. Maybe the production costs were too high, maybe there's a power play in process—whatever, it should make for a juicy behind-the-scenes exposé at some point.

Yeah I understand that, but I have a high suspicion that something else is going on. I know trying to get freelancers on a unionized show well good luck on trying to get that to happen. Hardly ever is that successful, I hear they are super strict on that in Hollywood, maybe sometimes they can get away with it in some areas, but very rarely. Not that I'm saying I'm at all against up and coming talent take a crack at it, but in all honesty if writers in a union are being treated this way. Are they going to treat freelancers fairly too? Unless of course they are so expensive, the staff writers I mean, but I don't know we will just have to see I have a great suspicion that its not though. I'm willing to bet on it or it could just be some rumor and someone was like "I'm going to tell the internet what a jerk Frank is!" lol.

Well apparently since he did redraft all the shows and people are "supposedly" still not liking them than maybe he should fire himself. That's the real answer to that question.

Wait a second... Freelancers are part of the WGA and get health care...job stability is debatable in television, from what I have heard from people who are staff writers...

Well that would make much more sense, because people were speculating actually using non-union people and I was like "What you can't do that?" Still though I don't think he was justified in firing his whole writing crew, unless he hires some back on as "freelancers" because he liked some of their ideas.

Here is a article saying it may or may not be a good idea. I guess he really wants to run it like a film, which I could understand since he is a filmmaker. But again these are different mediums, especially adapting a comic book to television and trying to appeal to mainstream audiences it's not a easy task.

But if the writing is still the same by you know who we know who to blame when season 2 comes around. I would say on the other side of the coin, this might be a good idea if they don't want to end up like "True Blood" in season 3. Because oh my god there was just so much bad in that writing that you don't even want to know and totally deviated from the books. I'm not saying that is not bound to happen with any source material, but it was just no words can describe. Still it was way to early to do anything so drastic like that, and like I said if you got rid of Robert Kirkman that was a really dumb idea.

Yeah...you cannot use a non-WGA writer on an American series. Well, wait... you CAn...but the minute they write a script and you pay them? They have to join the WGA. So, if they hired non-union? All they are doing is helping that writer become eligible for the WGA. And if the writer doesn't want to join? They cannot buy the script. The WGA is one of the few Unions that I think still really serve the purpose of protecting their members. If I sold a script, the first thing I would do is sign up (and not just because I had to).

Still, Russell Edginton? Best. Vampire. Villain. Ever.

Kirkman is on record with wanting the show to travel it's own story path and not just repeat the comic. I favor that, though I hope there are things they visit, even if it's in a different route.

Yeah there is that they can hire you, but I just always hear that its hard, maybe not as hard getting on SAG which I hear from friends that its always a nightmare. Well I don't have a lot of credits anyway to join a union so I don't have anything to worry about that yet.

Russell Eddington probably was the best thing about season 3, but I'm talking about the fiasco about with Bill and Sookie and she getting attacked by Bill only to take him back and make love. That was a really bad move people were equating that to domestic violence and really people were like "See it isn't better than Twilight!" lol
