Director of the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie (1992), Fran Rubel Kuzui, wants to bring Buffy back, sans Joss Whedon. Along with Vertigo Entertainment, Fran Rubel Kuzui is working on a remake or relaunch, but not a sequel or prequel.
Kuzui and her Kuzui Enterprises owns the rights to the original script - she discovered the Buffy script from then-unknown Whedon. She developed the script while her husband put together the financing to make the 1992 movie, which was released by Fox...
Kuzui later teamed with Gail Berman, then president of Sandollar Television, bringing back Whedon to make the TV series, which was produced by Fox TV and launched on the WB in 1997. Kuzui and Sandollar received executive producer credits on Buffy and its spinoff, Angel.
The new Buffy would have no connection to the TV series, or the actors in the series. Say goobye to thoughts of Xander, Willow, and Spike. Kuzui wanst to start fresh and not 'steal' any of Whedon's ideas. In fact, she wants to make it much darker.
Kuzui, who is prepping do direct a movie in Japan in the fall, added, "Everything has its moment. Every movie takes on a life at some point, and this seems like the moment to do this."
I have no idea what to think of this. The original movie was campy and while I did like it for what it was I don't see it being received well especially after the success of the TV show which was different in almost every aspect from the movie. I wonder why they think its the moment to do this.
