I guess it's New Trailer Day at FanGirlTastic. Earlier, we brought you the new Captain America. This time, we have the latest trailer for Zack Snyder's Sucker Punch, which stars Emily Browning and opens tomorrow.
I've liked all of Snyder's work so far. He did the impossible by delivering a Dawn of the Dead remake that not only wasn't awful — it actually kicked ass. Then, with 300, he brought Frank Miller's comic book to life in a way that was totally original (race-baiting accusations aside). With those two triumphs under his belt, he was cocky enough to translate Watchmen to the screen. While it wasn't as successful as 300, it didn't suck as hard as it should have.
Now, with Sucker Punch, Snyder has taken what's become his signature visual style and applied it to something that looks to be a grrl power mindfreak action fantasy living video game flick. Has his hubris finally wrestled his good sense to the ground and beat the crap out of it? We shall see tomorrow. Advance word has not been kind, but based on the trailer embedded below I'm betting that advance word doesn’t get it. I mean, come on — bunny robots, fire-breathing dragons and Carla Gugino? What’s not to like?
Oh well, if it doesn't work, Snyder always has Superman.
Personally, I only really enjoyed the Dawn of the Dead remake. I didn't like 300, and Watchmen was definitely a letdown. I don't generally expect great things from Snyder.
I've actually liked Zack Snyder's stuff a lot so far - I'll probably be giving this a Day Two Review, up within the next couple of days (maaaaybe tomorrow (hopefully)).
I think this is going to be a movie of pretty extreme reactions, both good and bad. I read a review where someone called it "THE LAST AIRBENDER with bustiers." Now throwing around comparisons to that fiasco is just irresponsible.
But as Kevin Smith said about Zack Snyder: "You gotta admire that dude because he swings for the fuckin' fences every time."
And he's right. Snyder, Nolan, Fincher and probably Michael Mann are the few mainstream directors out there pushing the medium in the big budget realm. And while I think SUCKERPUNCH looks like it was mainlined from a 12 year-old Japanese boy's wet dream you've just to admire Snyder's moxie for using his 300 clout to get these strange films made.

I read a review that called it "Comic Con: The Movie." Yeah, I think it's gonna be reviled, but I also think it's gonna be deeper than what people think.

When you laid out all of this guy's movies in a row I almost had a seizure. I've never seen so many horrible movies laid out next to each other. The Dawn remake was one of the worst flicks in history. Actually I take that back - it was just a regular piece of shit, but then scores of horror fans decided they loved it (many members of this site, Theron, not just you) and turned it into one of my least favorite films on principal.
300. I'll just say, "No comment", on that one. Don't need to re-open that can of worms.
Watchmen - There are good reasons why I loathe that movie, but bringing them up would open a new can of worms so I'll just leave it at this: It was a piece of shit.
And this is the dude who's doing the new Superman? Here's a prediction: Franchise ruined for life.
In case this guy reads this - Dude, I paid hard earned money to watch all of the above films. As soon as money changed hands with the clerk at the video store I earned the right to criticize them however I see fit - that right was included in the ticket price. Also, you're rich and everyone else seems to love you, so walk it off and enjoy your success. In fact, the reason you're rich is because people like me rented your movies, so I guess the joke is on us.
Wow. Well, we can agree to disagree. I get it. I do. And I absolutely respect someone with a strong opinion. It doesn't need to agree with mine, as long as it's heart-felt. But I really liked Dawn of the Dead and 300. Watchmen not so much, but it wasn't as bad as I'd feared. As for Superman, well I fear it's been dead for a while. Snyder might as well take a shot at it.

Also, Theron, my last paragraph in the quote "In case this guy reads this" was addressed to the director of these films, not you. I think that's clear in the text, but I just wanted to make sure you knew that. I added that part because sometimes famous directors read this site and I wanted to explain why I felt comfortable being such a harsh critic of his films (because I paid money to watch them, basically).
I don't have any disagreement with you, Theron. I don't consider having different opinions about movies a disagreement. People like what they like - it's not a big deal. Again, you probably already knew that but I just wanted to make sure.
Oops, sorry. Don't worry, I understood your comment. It's all good. Passionate discourse from passionate people about film is a good thing. The refreshing thing about the FGT forum is that it rarely devolves into the juvenile flaming rants often seen at other sites.

Cool. Well, I'm all for opinionated discourse too but there was really no need for my comment to be so negative. You wrote a fun article and I barged in with my bad attitude calling movies "pieces of shit". That was rude of me. This isn't really the place for me to get all negative like that. There were other, more civilized ways for me to state my opinion.
I guess I say things like that sometimes because I assume that, since so many other people love these movies, my opinion won't really matter and I can say pretty much whatever I want about them. And while that may be true, I should find more balanced ways to express myself in the future.
I mean, obviously these movies are not "pieces of shit". There must be something worthwhile about them because they are insanely popular and loved by nearly everyone. Sometimes I get carried away, and I was in kind of a shitty mood yesterday when I posted that comment.
Understood. Anyway, I just returned from Sucker Punch. I'm not going to review it here — Tristan has got that covered. But I will say that I liked it, but many will hate it. And I get why that is. But I think it was pretty cool. If nothing else, it looks great.

I agree with you guys and I'm sure Tristan will hit the nail on the head.

Two of the critics I respect and tend to agree with most, Nick Schager and Glenn Kenny, both gave it one star. Not a good omen, I guess, but it's probably not my cup of tea. I kinda liked the Dawn of the Dead remake, but, in retrospect, that may be more because of Sarah Polley and the awesome opening credits (with the Johnny Cash song) than anything special that Zack Snyder (although it's at least a competent zombie movie).
He He cute sword wielding girls in "Sailor Moon" outfits, altered realities and what looks like the Silver Samurai with a Gatling gun.......count me in. Haven't seen the film yet (obviously) but the trailer looks like fanboy heaven. yep yep
Heh, I just came here to post about early reviews, which are...really not kind.
Eh, we'll see. It does seem a bit dour, for all the crazy action.
