Shout Out To Laura Hudson At Comic Book Alliance

She says what I wish I could say: that comic book heroines look like fucking porn star whores and I don't admire them at all.

Laura Hudson of Comic Book Alliance wrote this smart, well-written, intelligent, and frank article about how comic book superheroines all look and act like sluts.

Quote:

And I'm tired. I'm so, so tired of hearing those messages from comics because they aren't the dreams or the escapist fantasies or the aspirations that I want to have. They don't make me feel joyful or powerful or excited. They make me feel so goddamn sad that I want to cry, because I have devoted my entire life to comics, and when I read superhero books like these I realize that most of the time, they don't give a sh*t about me.

Laura Hudson deserves (if not a paycheck) a raise and the respect of women everywhere who are sick of looking at straight-male masturbation-material everytime they look at a picture of some super heroine.

Yeah, superhero comics are dumb.

For example, this is how Robert E. Howard described 'Red Sonya of Rogatino':

And this is how the comics chose to portray her:

yeah. They were like, "Metal mesh? I can make that whore-ish."

"Wouldn't it be sexier if she was a total slut and had huge tits and was wearing a bathing suit?"

I mean, why would a woman wear PANTS if she were going into battle?

Ahhh, yes, the age-old question...

The only acceptable pants on a woman are yoga pants.

You know it's true.

Well, DC did say they were trying to reach out to new readers.

I had no idea they were attempting to siphon off readers of Maxim and Gore Zone.

As for Red Sonya, she probably forgot that female armor sucks.

Only cowards wear clothes into combat. Real women enter battle with as little coverage as possible.

When I first opened this article, I thought "Wow that cartoon girl is hot!"

Then I read the article and felt kind of bad.

This concludes my story.

Yeah. Can't deny, that in my teenage years, I had a She-hulk swimsuit poster, and a rather provocative poster of Electra juxtaposed to She-hulk hugging my wall. Shit, now that I think about it, there have been a number of comics that I have purchased as a early teenager based on sexy covers (Vampirella, Lady Death, Dawn...etc). That all died out when I got older and found real women more appealing.

I got to give it up for Laura Hudson. She wrote a very compelling article. She made it very clear why she was upset, and in some way, I was touched by her sincerity. I can't say that I completely understand, because I am a man and I don't know what it's like to be a woman, but I think I know frustration.

On the real, though, if artists start putting mom jeans on female superheroes, I'd probably buy it, out of comedy.

You know as a fan of comics this does really disturb me. When I first started getting into the online horror and comic book community, I was pretty disturbed that a lot of fans wouldn't admit this or just thought I was making a big deal out of nothing. For example, when I did post at allthingszombie one guy (surprisingly) actually objected that this recent comic book that was connected with "Night Of The Living Dead: Barbara Zombie Chronicles" that featured Barbara escaping in the original movie. That's how they wrote it in the comics as she did get away so they changed it. The guy who objected to this said that it was badly written, not to mentioned that he found that they completely exaggerated Barbara instead of making her look like a decent woman with a regular body all of a sudden and I quote "She has huge breasts with huge diamond shaped nipples through a white shirt! Barbara doesn't look like that!" Which was pretty offensive to the character not to mention changed her personality entirely giving her the attitude from the 90's Barbara instead of the 50's. I mean if they were going to do something like that, they could of at least did it in a way that was a complete rip off. This writer/artist who wrote/drew the comic books was completely offended that someone didn't like his work and I quote "Well I like drawing women with huge breasts and diamond size nipples that's what I like! If you don't like it don't buy it!" I was completely beyond offended, that he would have the audacity to say a thing in the most sexist and vulgar way possible, plus not to mention thinking it was totally ok to capture women in this way. Well after seeing that exchange online, I didn't bother to pick up that comic book if it offended that one guy not to mention it sucked he said. Well than I wouldn't like it obviously.

I also was reading I wish I had this essay still back in 03 or 04 why some artists draw superheroes the way they do. Some thought it was to emphasis their greatness since having superpowers that their bodies would be exaggerated and their private parts would be super too lol. I'm pretty sure it was along those lines, because I thought it was kind of hilarious. I understand that probably yes a superhero would be athletic, but seriously when I see those damn pictures of Psylocke in a damn skimpy swimsuit trying to seduce Scott Summers. I kind of find that beyond offensive, yeah they can try to say it was the storyline and it had a purpose like all things do in comics. But you're lying to yourself and others to say that's not written mostly for men in mind. Trying to say that it isn't those writers/artists are lying. There is nothing at all wrong with positive sexuality like Laura says, and I am still a firm believer in that, but this is hardly it and sorry to say looks this looks like male fan-fiction bullshit.
