News is starting to slip out about J. J. Abrams' upcoming sequel to his successful 2009 Star Trek reboot. Wait, since the flick isn't due until May 17, 2013, perhaps "upcoming" isn't exactly the best word. Let's go with "forthcoming."
It has been revealed that the villain of Untitled Star Trek Sequel will be played by failed wolfman Benicio Del Toro. A while back, there was a rumor circulating — spread by a website that shall remain nameless, but was NOT Planet Fury — claiming Del Toro would be taking the role of Khan, the operatic Latin scoundrel played by Ricardo Montalban in the original series' "Space Seed" episode and reprised on the big screen in 1982's Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. But that rumor has been squashed.
I repeat: Benicio Del Toro will NOT play Khan.
It was also announced that ex-RoboCop and occasional college professor Peter Weller has signed for a role. Recently, Weller has been earning a living with stints on Dexter, Fringe and the History Channel's Engineering an Empire. With a couple of appearances on Star Trek: Enterprise under his belt, this won't be Weller's first tour on a starship. Actually, that's not quite accurate. Weller's character on Enterprise was the bigoted John Frederick Paxton, a mining colony administrator on the moon, aka Luna. Planet Fury doesn't want to misinform you.
I repeat: Peter Weller's Enterprise character did NOT serve on a starship.
Okay, I think the inaccuracies have been cleared up now. Let's move on. Besides Del Toro and Weller, the stunning Alice Eve — who recently finished work on John Cusack's "Edgar Allan Poe, Boy Detective" film, The Raven — will also be appearing in Untitled Star Trek Sequel. Of course, her character has not been announced either.
The only actors whose characters we do know anything about are the first flick's returning cast members: Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Anton Yelchin, Karl Urban, John Cho and Simon Pegg. They'll be playing the same people they played in Star Trek. If you care, you already know who they played; if you don't care, I won't take the time to inform you. But rest easy in the knowledge that they will all be back, continuing to go where no man has gone before…except that's not quite true because this is a reboot. Man has gone there before, way back in 1966. You probably knew that already but, again, Planet Fury does NOT want to misinform you.
I loved the first film, lens flares and all.
And Peter Weller is a weird, creepy-looking dude in general. Maybe they'll cast him as an alien of some sort.
