Mexican Sci-Fi 'Seres: Genesis' May Hit US Theaters

Indie distributor and studio 24 Frames LLC has nabbed the North American rights to the Mexican science fiction film Seres: Genesis, and just may be taking it towards a US theatrical release.

The story of Seres: Genesis has become very popular in Mexico as a graphic novel, and an English version US release of that novel is planned for October of 2010. The film is the first of a trilogy based upon the graphic novel, and will open nationwide in Mexico on September 17th.

The story begins with the discovery of ancient artifacts entombed with the Mayan King Pakal, which are transcribed to reveal prophesies of doom for the entire human race. The time table for our imminent destruction is coming soon (sigh, yes, 2012), and the arrival of a hostile alien force seems to confirm our predicted fate. While I can't help but find the whole "2012" business to be nonsense, I will say that the trailer does look like slick and entertaining science fiction.

Seres: Genesis is the first of the trilogy; the two following films will be titled Seres: Evolution and Seres: Extinction.

The film isn't scheduled for a US release as of yet, but 24 Frames just might make it happen. We'll share as we hear more - for now, check out the trailer and let us know what you think with a comment below!
