Can you believe what an asshole James Franco is?

Apparently, he's in college at NYU taking film, and he missed 12 out of 14 - that's right, 12 out of 14 - sessions of a class and ended up with a "D" in the class. Then Franco got the professor fired.

Thankfully the professor is suing for his job back.

Hah I knew his whole spell in academia was nothing but feeding his ego. "I took 62 credit hours instead of 19 and was still a full time actor! I am so god damn amazing! Now I better get back to General Hospital."

So, why was the professor fired? Did I skip over that part? And they call him a "professor," but if he was unceremoniously fired, that must mean he is untenured...so, an associate professor? assistant professor? Lots of gaps in that story...

Considering the amount of privileged "I need an A to [insert reason here]" reactions that I and my colleagues get from regular undergrads, I can't imagine the sense of entitlement a celebrity might have.

I can't find anywhere that cites the actual reasons the professor was fired. I may have missed if he was credited as "associate" - which he probably was - since he was fired without much trouble.

No matter what the professor may have actually been doing that caused him to get fired, any student that misses 12 out of 14 classes probably deserves a "D." It'd have to be a pretty amazing person that did all the work, turned it on on time, and participated in class discussions to a degree to warrant a better grade during only 2 sessions.

On a wholly different note, under which circumstances CAN a tenured professor be fired? I assume breaking the law, or sex with students?

Well, the entire world gave Franco a 'D' for his Oscar hosting performance, so who's he going to blame for that?

The only reason he didn't get an 'F' is because he showed up.

I totally agree. In fact, depending on whether or not they turned in work, and how much of the grade depends on participation, an F might be more appropriate. The only way this wouldn't be the case is if they had some kind of disability arrangement, or a specific circumstance that was arranged prior, and turned in all their work. That has never happened to me though -- even students with disabilities come to class. I should imagine participation is even more crucial to an acting class. I'm definitely on the (assistant?) professor's side, from what I've read.

From what I have seen and read, sex-related crimes are the only ones that can get you fired unceremoniously. Not sex with students though. That may be different from school to school. I find that troublesome on a variety of levels.

I always thought the Oscars were pass/fail. Who knew?
