The CBC reported today that Elaine Campione, an Ontario mother of two, has been found guilty of murder in the deaths of her two daughters ages 3 years and 19 months. She was accused of drowning her daughters days before a family court appearance to prevent her allegedly abusive ex-husband from getting custody.
The case discussed Campione's apparent mental illness in the time leading up to the crime as the defence urged the jury to find her not criminally responsible on that basis. However, it seems the jury did not find that her mental illness rendered the mother incapable of knowing her actions were morally wrong. Evidence to suggest malice towards her ex-husband included a video found in the bedroom where she discusses the girls as though they're already dead and lays the blame on him for their deaths before spewing forth a tirade of hateful words towards him.
Campione will be serving a minimum of 25 years in prison before she will be eligible for parole.
