Nicolas Cage Drives Angrily — in 3D!

I just came across a trailer for Drive Angry 3D, a new Nicolas Cage flick, and god help me, it looks freaking awesome. Can this be a return to form for the ol' bee hater?

Drive Angry 3D is the story a man named Milton who escapes Hell to track down the cult that murdered his daughter before — get this — they sacrifice his granddaughter. The trailer is a testosterone-fueled ride back to the grindhouse, full of big guns, hot muscle cars and scorching action. And of course, Nic Cage is strutting around the proceedings in what looks to be a rather measured performance. He's still over the top, but for Cage, it's fairly minimalist.

The flick is full of excellent supporting players and was directed by Patrick Lussier, who helmed the recent decent remake of My Bloody Valentine and appears to be headed for Halloween III territory next. Gnashing it up onscreen with Cage is Billy Burke, Charlotte Ross, Pruitt Taylor Vince, David Morse, Katy Mixon, Amber Heard and the always awe-inspiring William Fichtner, who plays The Accountant, whose job it is to account for Cage's soul and drag him back to Hell.

Drive Angry 3D is the type of grindfest that's usually full of negative portrayals of females and maybe it is, but the character played by Amber Heard is a tough, kickass '70s fox who suffers no fools and takes no prisoners. Maybe she can succeed where the femmes of Bitch Slap failed.

Check out the trailer embedded below and see what you think. I've always been a Nicolas Cage fan, but he's been making it increasingly hard to stay on his side lately. But he just might be on a roll. I really liked his Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call – New Orleans, and Season of the Witch looks intriguing. But with Cage, for every Adaptation, there's a Ghost Rider or Wicker Man lurking around. I suppose we'll find out on February 25, 2011, when it's released, if Drive Angry succeeds or just makes us angry that we had to drive to theater to see it. Until then, I remain optimistic, yet pragmatic. As long as there are no bees, we might be good.

I wasn't too thrilled with the film until the escape from Hell/run from the devil's minion aspect was mentioned. I though it was some lame road rage flick, but now I'll have to check it out.

Nic Cage is a pretty brilliant actor I think. I honestly love Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans. Especially the iguana love scene and Nic's stupid grin. Seems like I've been hearing about this one forever and I definitely want to see it.

It's the crazy over the top aspect that makes me want to see it, Chris.

Cage is a good actor...and often, with certain exceptions, he can be equally entertaining in his "paying my bills" work he has been forced to do for the past several years. To bad for him, he lost all that cash from his formerly profitable action hero turn.

Yeah, taxes can be a bitch. I think Cage is a great actor, but he's turned into this generation's Michael Caine — he's in fucking everything! But it's interesting, because he's often the only memorable thing in these otherwise forgettable movies (eg, The Wicker Man). I like to think of his over-the-top performances as his version of acting as performance art, as opposed to the art of performance.

I think a lesser actor having been in as many bad movies as he has wouldn't be working anymore.

Good point. I'm hoping he's on an upswing. I don't know anything about Season of the Witch, but the commercials look good. That means nothing, of course...

That looks interesting to me too. But yeah his movies can be horrible, average or every once in awhile great like Adaptation. I too enjoy them for the most part though. I couldn't find a single thing to like about Ghost Rider however.

Yeah, I think Ghost Rider is the worst comic book flick yet...even worse than Daredevil.

Fuck Daredevil! And before anyone says anything, no the director's cut does not make it a good movie. Maybe I just hate Ben Affleck too much.

Poor Ben. Buddy Matt has blasted right past him. I like Affleck okay. Maybe he can reinvent himself as a director. Oh, have you seen the commercials telling you "You Want To See The Town, But You Have To Buy It Because Netflix Doesn't Have it"?! Argh! Netflix doesn't have it because you, movie studio, colluded with Netflix to keep it from us so you could tell us to buy it. You suck, movie studio and Netflicx!

I like Matt Damon a lot. My fiancee wanted to rent The Town but I told her I wasn't going to watch it with her if she did. I can't bring myself to. We rented Family Guy Return of the Jedi which is freaking hysterical, Wall Street and Legend of the Guardians. Owl puke is way more interesting than Ben Affleck.

Well, no matter what everyone watches, have a great evening! We're watching Santa Claus Is Coming to Town (Rankin & Bass), followed by Greenberg maybe...

Well, I enjoyed Daredevil, though I think they should have kept Elektra out of it. Too much for one movie, but that's how superhero movies were made just a few years ago, cram as many villains into one story as possible.

And yea, movie studios and Netflix suck for keeping movies from being rented the day of release. It doesn't mean I'm going to buy your crappy movie just to see it. And if it doesn't show up on Netflix, oh well. I've got plenty of other things to watch, so screw you!!!

As for tonight's viewing, it's looking like I'll be watching Scott Pilgram (finally), followed up by Die Hard and the animated Grinch (my favorite Christmas movies!).

I love all those animated Christmas movies. Die Hard is indeed an excellent Christmas movie.

We've watched all of those movies while cleaning and wrapping today. Now we're settling down for the traditional movies. I watch It's a wonderful life every Christmas Eve. Have my whole life. My fiancee has watched White Christmas on Christmas Eve her whole life. They are my 2 favorite Christmas movies.

Have a good Christmas tomorrow. I'm looking forward to playing with the toys I got for my sons.
