This Is More Like it: The New 'John Carter' Poster

It's been a while since we've heard anything about John Carter, Disney's upcoming version of Edgar Rice Burroughs' John Carter of Mars series.

When I last wrote about John Carter (HERE), I complained about the crappy poster. I'm happy to say the powers that be have seen fit to retool the one sheet. Have a look.

Pretty cool, right? Not perfect, but better. It's highly reminiscent of the Ballantine paperback covers of the 1970s. When I was a kid, I spent hours roaming around the local mall's B. Dalton, with a large amount of my time concentrated in the "science fiction" section where I would moon over the pulpy covers of all the various and sundry fantasy novels — the best of which belonged to the Burroughs books. Check this out and see if it doesn't feel like what the Disney marketing team was going for.

Hopefully, the movie will hold the sensational fun hinted at by the new poster. I hope it does, because the trailers don't. While the film looks gorgeous, it's all rather somber and low-key. I appreciate director Andrew Stanton wanting to treat the material with respect, but he would do well to remember that a little fun goes a long way.

A bit bland, but maybe that's just Kitsch not being a particularly interesting actor. Hopefully the proper poster will be more dynamic and Frazetta-like.

But, let's face it, it'll just be floating heads.

I wish someone could find a way to make a fantasy flick that truly was Frazetta-like. Even Ralph Bakshi's and Frazetta's animated Fire and Ice wasn't very Frazetta-like. Maybe Robert Rodriguez can make it happen when he tackles the live action version of Fire and Ice next year.

That would be awesome. But good luck finding 'Frazetta women' out there in Hollywood.

Speaking of which, I think Lynn Collins looks great as Dejah Thoris. Based on the trailer she's got the curves and the copper skin the character needs.

I remember seeing her in TRUE BLOOD, where she played the town sex-pot, and being like "Dayumm!!" We won't mention that WOLVERINE movie...

And she's a woman (same age as me, incidentally), not a little girl trying to act tough and looking silly. In fact, she looks a hell of a lot more interesting and committed to the role than Kitsch does.

Yes, Hollywood is allergic to women who look like women. It's full of women who look like 10-year-old boys. Not cool.

Yes, Lynn Collins is great, plus she's a Texas girl. Yeeeeeeee-haw!

I say they should cast her as Bêlit the Pirate Queen if they ever decide to make a good Conan movie.

Based on the latest Conan's box office, I think that (pirate) ship has sailed, my friend...

Frazetta type women in a Hollywood film? We can dream. Meanwhile in the "real" (ahem) world a D-cup bust is considered huge and 5'6" is short. Sad

Have to go with the Frazetta crowd on this one. Everything about his artwork for the books is so iconic, I can't imagine a film trying to distance itself from his work Yet this version seems to be trying. I'll probably drop my $10+ to see it, but I don't expect much.
