Anybody else here a Highlander fan? I thought so. Well, a remake of that awesomely wicked cool 1986 sci-fi fantasy flick starring Sean Connery, Clancy Brown and Christopher Lambert has been in development for years now. It has a studio (Summit), a director (Justin Lin) and a producer (Peter Davis). Now all it needs is a script.
Highlander follows the exploits of immortal 16th century Scotsman Connor MacLeod as he engages in a centuries-spanning battle with other immortal warriors. The film flashes between past and present as he fights to be the last remaining immortal, because "There can be only one!"
So far, two separate teams of screenwriters have tried to bring a fresh, new perspective to the exhilarating journey that is the lusty life of Connor MacLeod. And what a life it is. The action! The adventure! The conflict! The humor! And, yes, the romance! But to date, no one has been able to get it right. Enter Melissa Rosenberg.
The Hollywood Reporter is, umm, reporting that Rosenberg, screenwriter of the Twilight films, is going to take a stab at writing a new draft of Highlander. Apparently, Summit admires Rosenberg's ability to handle "both character and action, as well as yearning, a key component of Highlander as protagonist Connor MacLeod watches his true love age while he does not." To quote the Highlander himself (and fanboys everywhere), "This cannot be; it's the devil's work."
While it's true that element does exist in Highlander, the worry is that Rosenberg will turn MacLeod into a mopey Edward Cullen analogue. I'm sure she can make the Highlander yearn like nobody's business. I can see it now. He'll sit on the roof of his loft and stare at the moon, yearn, hang his head and weep, and then yearn some more while staring at the moon, weeping. And I'm sure the romance will be extra-romantic, with hundreds of glowing candles and rose petals scattered about. But can Rosenberg handle the macho action and camaraderie? The ages-old quest? The battles? The beheadings? The Gathering?
Maybe she can. Twilight isn't all that Rosenberg has done. She's ably handled genre work on several television series, including Birds of Prey (comic book), The Magnificent Seven (western), The Agency (thriller), Dark Skies (sc-fi), Dexter (crime drama) and Hercules: The Legendary Journeys (adventure). Think about it. If you mix all those shows up into one big project, you get Highlander.
So, everyone can calm down...for now. Let's see what Rosenberg can do with something that doesn't involve sparkly vampires, hunky werewolves and teen angst. Who knows, maybe Rosenberg can even get her script produced, and thereby win The Prize. (Ed. note: I make no apologies for that unabashed Highlander reference.)

Damned good point.
I made this website. I'm sorry.
