McG's Ouija Board Movie Is But a Ghost

It's hard being McG. He's never quite lived up to the promise attached to him when he first burst onto the film scene as a rising star back in 2000.

Since those youthful, turn-of the-century salad days, McG has made one pretty good film, more not-so-good films and has had several projects dropped completely. Due to his agoraphobia and aerophobia issues, he even had to drop out of the Superman reboot that Bryan Singer ended up directing, though that might have been a blessing in disguise now that I think about it.

Now, McG has been dealt another stinging blow, this time by Universal Pictures, which has backed out of his proposed Ouija board movie. This flick was part of Universal's plan to turn everything in Hasbro's overstuffed toy box into a movie. Films based on games such as Monopoly, Risk and Candy Land are planned and, as you probably know, an alien-filled Battleship movie is headed into port next summer.

While I feel a little sorry for McG, I can't blame Universal for canceling his cinematic séance. It seems the idea McG had for Ouija was action-oriented and had nothing at all to do with ghosts, haunted houses, the supernatural or even vampires, which I hear are all the rage these days. Think about it. A Ouija board movie with vampires? That would rock! (Call me, Universal. Let's do lunch.)

Anyway, McG and producing partner Michael Bay are now free to take their Ouija board idea to another studio and even received $5 million for walking away quietly, so I don't feel too bad for them. But, c'mon, considering the movie's subject matter, it seems like McG should have seen this whole mess coming. Am I right?

You know hahha I hate to say this I wouldn't be opposed by a "Oujia" movie because lol I was a fan of those as a kid. I bought a real fancy one made out of real "magical" wood and it has a triquetra and I paid you can all laugh $60 dollars. Because well it was really beautiful and I just thought it make a nice keepsake and scare people. Because man it was hilarious people telling me I was going to get possessed and ghosts were going to get me. So shit if you can crank out a real good story with that without being gimmicky (which I am very afraid that would be the case) I say go for it. You know I shouldn't be ashamed of buying that thing because it is very pretty. To hell if ghosts are going to get me because that thing looks beautiful!

Watch the original Witchboard, Private, if you want to see a Ouija board movie done right. And don't watch anything about the movie first, or you'll miss the greatest jump scare ever caught on film.

As for McG, it's obvious he's the wrong director for this movie. No supernatural elements? For shame.

You know I still haven't seen that one I need to I'm trying to remember one movie I think had the Oujia board in it. I just remember it being a murder mystery and it was made I think in the 70's and 80's. I remember because it was during the time I saw it the late 80's. Plus I remember the bad guy looking kind of like Clint Eastwood. That's what I remember most about it.

When I was a kid, Ouija boards were the "in thing," so you don't have to feel embarrassed, Pvt. When considering art for this piece, I saw so many pics of cool, gorgeous Ouija boards. But I felt I needed to go with the standard Hasbro Ouija board rather than choose one of the beautiful ornate boards that are, essentially, art.

As for Witchboard, though I'm a huge Kevin Tenney fan, that flick never really did it for me. I'm much more Night of the Demons than Witchboard, though I do recognize its worth as a Ouija board film. I love her now, but Kathleen Wilhoite is sooo irritating in that flick. I kinda like Witchboard 2 more.

I got a Hasbro one too when I was a kid, and than I bought the real fancy one. Thanks for sharing that you aren't the only one who had a Ouija board.

I want a movie to explain to me why it is pronounced "wee jee" and not "oo-ee-ja" or "ow-ee-ja."

Actually, it's suppose to be more oo-ee-ja, according to the expert in Witchboard. And I agree with Theron, it's no Night of the Demons, but it's a solid entry for a first time filmmaker. And Tawny Kitaen get's really spooky in the final act.

Oh, and did I mention you can read my review of the film on this very site?

Oh, such shameless self promotion. Just awful.
