Kathryn Bigelow's The Hurt Locker, in an extreme twist of sweet sweet irony, is up against ex-husband James Cameron and his film Avatar for Best Director at the 2010 Academy Awards, it was announced today.
This is the 4th time a woman has been nominated for Best Director (the last time was in 2004 with Sophia Coppola for Lost in Translation) and frankly, it might be the first time a woman ever wins. I can't think of any woman who deserves it more or a film that stands out like Bigelow's does this year.
The Hurt Locker has 9 Academy Awards nominations including Best Picture, Actor, Director, Screenplay, Cinematography, Sound Mixing, Sound Editing, Score, and Editing.
It is true! isn't it weird???
I mean, it can't be, like, 'overt' sexism. I think it is just a weird thing, a remnant of times when women weren't even allowed to vote. My take on this is that we live in evolving times - women haven't even been voting a full century. We need time to allow ideas and people and society to grow. And it is growing. But we have to remember we're in an evolving state, and it is only getting better for women.
The world is a very different place than it was 100, 200, 500 years ago, and women's roles in society are waaaaaaay different. But ut is hard to get over thousands of years in not even a century. I have faith!
