'Iron Man 3' Details Emerge

Shane Black, the ground-breaking screenwriter of the Lethal Weapon series who has signed to write and direct the next installment of the Iron Man franchise for Marvel Studios, has recently dropped a few details about the forthcoming adventures of Tony Stark.

According to a report from AICN, Black has revealed that Marvel wasn't too thrilled with the direction of Iron Man 2; therefore, Iron Man 3 will not be another "two men in iron suits fighting each other" flick. The plan is for the next film to be "a Tom Clancy-thriller, with Iron Man fighting real world villains."

Black also said that Iron Man 3 will not feature any cameos from other Marvel Universe characters. Apparently, all the recent crossovers that have been occurring will cease with the 2012 release of The Avengers. After that, all Marvel flicks will return to being self-contained vehicles for the titular superheroes.

Robert Downey Jr. is set to meet with Black this week in Los Angeles to discuss the story of the next Iron Man movie before Black begins writing. I'm excited about the possibilities of this partnership. These two have a good track record already. Downey starred in Black's wonderful 2005 flick Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, a clever film noir meta-comedy that also served as Black's directorial debut.

Jon Favreau did great things with Iron Man, but now it's time for someone new to take over. Shane Black might seem like an odd choice, especially since he's only directed one previous film. We know Black can write a killer big-budget action flick, but can he effectively helm a big-budget tentpole superhero effects extravaganza? I guess we'll find out on May 3, 2013, the reported release date for Iron Man 3. Until then, take a look at the trailer for Black and Downey's previous film, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, and think about what the future may hold for ol' Shellhead.

Apparently Downey brought Black on board the previous films to do some dialogue punch-ups for him, so it's good that Black will have the star in his corner should any disputes arise.

There were whispers that Marvel screwed with Favreau too much on the second film and that's why he isn't returning.

Because if there is one thing Iron Man has never, ever been about? It's two men in Iron Suits fighting each other.

Yeah, no kidding. Actually, I thought Iron Man 2 handled it much better than the Iron Man 1.

And if Marvel didn't like that, then they must have hated the Hulk showdown between Tim Roth and Edward Norton.

The introduction of the Mandarin, Iron Man's true nemesis, could be intertwined with the Tom Clancy espionage slant and would be quite current considering the rise of the Chinese Empire once more.

Good point. Iron Man's rogue's gallery is fairly limited, with Mandarin being his main nemesis. But Mandarin is a very comic-y character. Perhaps the producers could back away from his magical ten rings and focus on Mandarin's use of technology to, dare I say it, rule the world! Now's the time, Marvel...
