I've read a few of Chopper's books and the guy knows how to spin a yarn, although there's really no way to tell how much of it is bullshit.
Eric Bana as Chopper was a monumental shock to Australians. He was previously known as a light comedian on sketch shows. Nobody thought he had it in him to give such a volcanic performance.
Also, his is one of the greatest pieces of television ever. The day after Chopper appeared extremely drunk on a chat show the media were blasting him and the show for allowing it. Among those critics was a man named Alan Jones, a radio blow-hard and still-closeted homosexual.
During a a contrived interview about Chopper a typically pursed-lipped Jones thought he'd get try and get the moral high ground when Chopper actually called in to talk.
What he got was one of the greatest smack-downs of all time.
Still makes me laugh...
