Halloween Memories: Meaghan Rath

When looking for a way to commemorate Planet Fury's first official Halloween, we thought long and hard about what would be special for our wonderful readers, for whom we would gladly fight brain-hungry zombies, bathe particularly disagreeable black cats or even review terrible horror movies…wait, we already do that. But you get the idea.

We finally decided the best way to celebrate would be to contact some of our favorite women of the dark arts and gather their fondest Halloween recollections for your enjoyment. The Planet Fury cabal then congregated in the Planet Fury offices one Saturday afternoon and promptly began arguing about whether those assembled did indeed constitute a cabal — while Heidi insisted we were a cadre, I held firm in my belief we comprised a cabal. Tristan, ever the pragmatist, declared us a "freaking pain in the ass" and we moved on.

We crowded around the Planet Fury Rolodex, gave it a spin and selected a cross-section of the most talented women currently working in the world of weird. I don't want to spoil the surprise, but I think you'll be pleased with our choices.

All week, I'll be sharing Halloween reminiscences I've collected from these lovely ladies, but I'm going to kick things off with the supercool Meaghan Rath, star of Syfy's original series Being Human.

Meaghan and I met a few months ago when I hosted a panel with her at Houston's Comicpalooza. For a chick that makes her living portraying a rather disheartened ghost on a hit TV show, Meaghan revealed herself to be an unexpectedly genuine and upbeat young lady, one who loves comic books, genre flicks and pretending she's a mermaid. (Okay, maybe she's not that normal.)

I caught up with Meaghan a few days ago on set in Canada, where she's hip deep in filming season two of Being Human. When I mentioned that, believe it or not, some people don't care for Halloween and many do not even consider it a proper holiday, Meaghan expressed disbelief, exclaiming, "Halloween might be my favorite holiday of all time!"

Halloween was a time enjoyed by the whole Rath family. "My mom would make the most amazing costumes," Meaghan said. Smiling at the memory, she shared one specific recollection. "When I was 12, mom made me a three-headed monster that I still have — my best costume to date!"

I steered the conversation to horror films, a topic dear to Meaghan's heart. When asked her three favorite scary movies, Meaghan chose Drag Me to Hell, for Sam Raimi's singular ability to mix horror and comedy; The Exorcist, because of course; and 28 Days Later, because she digs fast zombies the most (a point about which we agree to disagree).

Before she was pulled away, Meaghan revealed that season two of Being Human picks up a few weeks after the end of season one, and ghost Sally, vampire Aidan and werewolf Josh are still reeling from the existence-altering events of last season. Fans can expect loads of new characters, and therefore loads of new sexiness as well as new problems for our trio of intrepid paranormal roommates.

Meaghan has, of course, been sworn to secrecy about the specifics of next season, which premieres January 16. But I begged like a dog asked nicely on behalf of her fans, so Meaghan laughed and threw me a bone dropped a hint in the form of three intriguing sound bites:

"Being Human 2: Welcome to the dark side."
"Being Human 2: This time it's personal."
"Being Human 2: Once you go black, you never go back."

Umm, okay. Happy Halloween from Meaghan Rath and Planet Fury!
