Reading that article actually sparked a rant from me on my blog in support of video games being an art form, albeit not the most well written one.

I'm under the vein that video games truly can be an art form, as much as any book, painting or orchestra, and Guillermo Del Toro certainly has the right idea. What does everybody else think?

I think the "intelligentsia" would probably like to define art in the most strict of sense so that is conforms more to their taste and sensibilities. Is art defined by it's monetary worth? In 10 or 20 years will Lloyd's of London being insuring collections and Christie's auctioning them?

The one thing I felt when playing Shadow of the Colossus was regret in having to kill the creatures who felt to me like they were more misunderstood than anything. Their next game has been my most anticipated PS3 release since I bought it.

Guillermo is the most down-to-Earth genius I've ever seen. I'd love to just hang out with the guy. Maybe a bar-b-q, some games, movies, a little football.

I also think he's doing more to turn around the genre and the distribution of independent films than anyone.

Spielberg has nothing on Del Toro. Speilberg had a studio that designed games but Guillermo wants to design them himself, I bet if he could he'd code them too and maybe he can. Aside from that there are films obviously and books, The Strain is right there with Bram Stoker's and Salem's Lot to me, a young adult book, short stories for an anthology, cartoons and I hear he's got a hand in the Munsters TV show and God knows what else.

The horror genre has pretty much been the studio's bitch since the mid-eighties and now there's a voice of a respected artist that feels the same way I do and like you said isn't afraid to say it. It's early but in 5, 10 years I'm pretty sure that he'll have made a pretty big impact.

I can't wait for THQ to make an official announcement. He's said his games are going to be Lovecraftian but big and challenging and not survival/horror.

Call of Cthulu is a great game and to me it captured the atmosphere of Lovecraft better than any movie so far.
