This is a strange one. A free comic being passed around the convention circuit, I have no idea what to make of this one. It's completely done in 3-D computer graphics (poorly, might I add), and I have questions as to whether the author is competent in English, the language in which he chose to write the comic. Simple, strange, and oddly sexual in nature, Gamma Girl details the adventures of Melody, a genetically engineered child, who grows up to be superhero. And, last but not least, everything seems to be based on the principals of physics! What could be more exciting than that?
Gamma Girl is orphaned at a young age, then, her adopted parents are killed in a drive-by shooting. She then goes on to make her own weapons, using physics jargon, and then flies around in a skimpy, skin-tight thong, which of course, is necessary to fight criminals. What is amazing about this comic is that it's all rendered in really crappy 3-D, so bad that it might have been better for Marquez to just pose some Barbie dolls in various situations and taken photographs. Gamma Girl is androgynous, but seems to end up in sexual situations. Her first act as a superhero is to save a naked woman from being raped. The language used in this comic is atrocious. Wanna see some examples?
'Before you can rape me, you must first swell where it counts!' (Followed by a kick to the groin)
'My body shields are useless; he's crushing me like a soggy banana! Uhhh!'
'I gotta get outta here before I become a bloody tortilla!'
'Without warning, Gamma Girl is attacked by a flying eyeball!'
'How do we know you aren't the dreaded anti-Christ?'
Ugggh. It's just soooo baaaad.
The most irritating thing about this comic is the damn religious overtones. By the end of this issue you feel as though you're reading Christian literature. It's justnotfun. And comics are supposed to be fun, aren't they?
Don't bother with Gamma Girl unless you can suspend your desire for talented artists and writers. It's a valiant effort on the part f someone who obviously worked very hard, but it can't stand up, nor match up to, even the least popular comic being created today in the mainstream. The Collector's Edition? Are they serious? I guess we know why it's being given away for free
