Jezebel reports about a recent Twitter attack on gamer and actress Felicia Day, who was called a 'glorified booth babe,' among other things. Jezebels uses this case to launch an in-depth investigation into the issue of misogyny in the gaming community:

I don't know if it's as much a problem in the gaming industry as it is a problem in the young douche-bro population. Young douche-bro's make up a portion of video game players, and also are typically dicks in many regards. If we could poison that population, wiping them from the face of the earth - both those that play video games and those who do not - then many of the world's problems would fade or disappear outright.

A clear cut case of douche-bro-sogynism here.

Hate one way or the other in such a trivial and pointless context is a needless thing but it exists.

Why can't we just all get a longsword?

Peace

As it happens, I just learned who Felicia was the other day when I saw an episode of her show "The Guild". It's a show about gaming, created, written, and starring someone who obviously is a gamer. Doesn't that qualify?

Even if Felicia was just an actress who publicly talks about gaming and what have you and that was it, so what? She doesn't have enough street cred? This attitude that people aren't allowed to be associated with something they like because they don't fit certain nerd parameters is stupid and annoying. "I'm a true gamer and Felicia Day isn't, so she sucks!" Shut up.

Update: Ms. Day is now being attacked on YouTube and Twitter for 'getting the guy fired' who so childishly attacked her; totally ignoring the fact that she accepted his apology--it was his host publication's decision to end his employment.

Here's a video she did for Reddit which displays her intelligence; many of the comments below the video, not so much!

I even like The Guild now that I despise the game it's based around. Work my ass off grinding day in and day out for epics (I remember I used to defend the game when someone claimed it was repetitive and boring), putting up with 40 person raids and guild drama for what? To have everything become obsolete when they release an expansion .... fuck you Blizzard!

I can even forgive her appearance in that horrible live action Dragon Age movie, a franchise that should've died out with the release of the dumbed down and lazy second game (every area looks the same, they made no effort at all to make them unique).

There isn't a blueprint for what a gamer should or shouldn't be, hell my grandmother played Atari religiously even after Nintendo, PS1, etc came out, "Why do I need a new game system, this one still works fine." (it is still working by the way). She didn't look like a gamer, but could kick your ass in Combat.

The thing is, that I don't think he should get fired for having an opinion. Most writers are just jerks (look at me).

While Felicia Day may have many accomplishments, some people may not be fans of hers regardless.

I do think the male-dominated gaming industry doesn't respect the creative types; engineers seem to be the ones who get taken seriously. I don't know how I feel about that.

Maybe you should write a new gender bender flick revolving around a girl in the game industry that has to dress as a man in order to get ahead. You could call it, "Just One of the Guys 2: Blood and Giblets".

I agree with you to a point.

The writer had every right to question if she really matters, as long as he backed it up with something. And Twiter isn't known for it's ability to study a topic in depth, so he shouldn't have posted on that.

But to follow it up with a direct Tweet, asking if she's no better than a booth babe, don't just cross a line. He pissed on the line, ran over it, then called in a napalm strike on it. Rather than opening a discussion on someone's credibility, it came off as more of a drunken Twiter rant. Which is bad enough, but he also writes for a website, and having a writer that will personally attack people on Twitter will probably close quite a few doors in your face.

This won't solve anything, as assholes like this are everywhere. But I can understand why the site would be so quick to dump him.

Did he says this on his work Twiter or his personal Twiter? If he said it on his work Twiter I can see that being a problem because it reflects on his work. If it was his personal Twiter, it is still pretty bad but I don't know if his work could have censored him for something he said on his own. This is another example of how things people post on the internet can come back to bite them on the ass.

It didn't say, but his posts show a severe lack of judgement. He should have known those comments would get on the web. And, even if it was his personal account, his name would be associated to the website, dragging it into this controversy.

Friends shouldn't let friends tweet when drunk, I guess.

I'd think that by now Felicia Day has well proven her credentials by working her pert, freckled little butt off producing huge amounts of nerd-friendly content. Often writing, producing and performing in it herself.

And anyone who has watched THE GUILD knows that it is far from some attention-seeking vanity project used to bait nerds and act as a career stepping stone. It;'s a funny, warm and affectionate series about a group of disparate people who bond over an MMO. It's not the "Hey, I'm Felicia and I'm cute! Look at me in this bikini licking a Gamecube..." kind of bullshit.

Anyone who doubts her authenticity as a genuine gamer girl icon is, quite frankly, a miserable sack of shit. Let him go back to whacking off over centrefolds of Olivia Munn and Jessica Chobot.
