The Expendables 2 introduces a female member to the team and you’ll never guess who it is

No, really, you’ll never guess.

According to Cinema Blend, The Expendables 2 will introduce a female character that “…won’t simply be the damsel in distress. Instead, she’ll be kicking ass and taking names with the rest of the gang.” And they have the photos off the blog site to prove it.

But I really doubt the results will be quite as exciting as we hoped, as Yu Nan is cast as the female ass kicker in the picture.

Told you you’d never guess.

Despite dozens of actresses with action film backgrounds (and I believe most of our favorite choices were covered here), the filmmakers decided to go with an actress with no background in action movies, at least based to my Internet search.

Okay, she was in the film adaptation of Speed Racer. But rather than playing an undercover agent or something cool like that, she simply handed Speed a ticket to get into the big race. Oh, she did star with Dolph Lungren in Diamond Dogs, but I never saw that DTV film and IMDb doesn’t list enough of a plot summery for me to figure out if she was an action hero or damsel in distress.

And, if you clicked onto either of the sites I listed above, you’ve noticed that Yu isn’t doing anything really awesome in the photos. She’s just walking next to Stallone or hiding behind a car while Sly is taking aim with his pistol. She isn’t armed, she’s not kicking anyone in the face, she’s just not doing anything action worthy.

Well, I need to clarify a few things here. First, I’m not implying that Yu is a bad actress. I’ve never seen her work, but she’s won the Golden Rooster (China’s equivalent of the Oscar) and several other awards at international film festivals. And, with the right amount of training, some skillful camera work and editing, and a good stunt team, anyone can look like a major ass kicker. Also, we’ve only been shown two pictures, basically two single frames from a 90-plus-minute movie. I don’t want do the math, but at 24 frames per second, it leaves an awful lot of time for Yu to kick some ass.

Yet, I’m still not happy with the choice. First off, she’s a bit young to be playing off Stallone (she was born in 1978, two years after Rocky was released). And if the two share any kind of chemistry other than grandfather/granddaughter, the film will get into the icky May/October thing endemic to movies with aging male actors, and I’m getting sick of that.

Second, I can think of several actresses with action film backgrounds perfect for the role. Michelle Yeoh, for example, if the script calls for a Chinese actress. She’s gorgeous, has fighting skills and…
Oh, I forgot. She’s almost 50. We can’t have a 65-year old action hero costar with some old lady. Imagine how filmgoers around the world might react. We could have an absolute riot at the multiplex.

Again, I’m not saying Yu will be bad, that she can’t act or that the filmmakers won’t find a way to make her fighting scenes look good (if she has any). I’m just annoyed that, with so many great (male) action stars in this movie, the filmmakers couldn’t deliver one awesome female action star. Just one. And I thought of seven who could pull the role off in the time it took me to type that last sentence.

Well, I guess we should count our blessings. At least they didn’t hire Megan Fox.

PS: I addressed Yu Nan as Yu in the body of the story, as Yu is her family name. I believe that’s proper etiquette, so please forgive me if I’m wrong. The fault is entirely mine.

It's a bit disappointing. Almost as disappointing as the hat Stallone is wearing in that second picture.

All logic and common sense would have pegged Michelle Yeoh for that role. I recently watched Yeoh in REIGN OF ASSASSINS and she's more beautiful now than she ever was. She's got the gravitas of age and still has amazing screen presence.

But I guess Sly doesn't want to risk being upstaged.

Channeling Paradise Alley. At least he isn't singing the theme song.

As for the article, we'll see. It's too early to tell, but yeah, it's disappointing Stallone has not included some women. I thought he would do so in the sequel, after feeling things out with the first one. Oh well. It just means his movie is like the rest of Hollywood. I still love him.

Bridgitte Nielson is the obvious first choice, for me, but I suppose there might be some "bad blood" there that would prevent them from ever working together (see Wikipedia entry on "Cocaine, Adultery, and Sylvester Stallone in the 1980s")

Maybe it is set in China? If so, I'd still prefer Yeoh. Maybe this chick will surprise everyone and carve out a name for herself (but i doubt it, if Sly's last several films indicate what the female presence/characters in Expendables 2 will be like).

My favorite female Hong Kong ass kicker is Kara Hui, and here is a recent picture of her:

Keep in mind she was beating up dudes on film in the fucking seventies. I guess that's what happens when you stay in shape.

Auntie!! Grin

Yeah, she's awesome. And is still going strong, even winning legit acting awards and whatnot.

From the stills, I'm starting to feel this is going to suck just as much or more as the last one. Stallone's bloated ego is going to get into the way of the writing and screw it all up. :hat:

Not familiar with her work, but anyone in The Inspector Wore Skirts series has my vote.

Um... Have you seen Neilson in the last few years? I don't think she could do it...

That's some some shitty research you made. Last year Yu Nan was in an action film called WIND BLAST, where she played an assassin.

Wow, that's a bit hostile. But, I guess you've never missed any sources in your research, have you?

Look, It is an action film and I did miss it. To be honest, I saw the film on her IMDb page, but it was listed as Xi Feng Lie, with no English translation and no plot summary. And I didn't see any mention of the film, nor an English translation of the title, at several other sites I searched. I might have caught it, had I spend a bit more time delving on the Web, or had I known of whatever site you got that information from.

But the bottom line is, I missed that movie. My apologies to Yu and the readers of Planet Fury.

That said, allow me to make a suggestion. The next time you notice such an omission in an article, you might not want to start out with such a vulgar, personal attack at the author. A simple, "You missed this one..." is a good way to start. And, if you feel like being generous, include the sources/sites you used in your research. The web has a lot of information and it can be easy to miss one item in the flood of movie sites out there.

Besides, I know the writers on this site take pride in their work, feel bad when they've missed something and will be happy for any information to help them avoid such missteps in the future.

Or, you can continue coming off like a jackass. Your choice.

That's the thing about the writers at Planet Fury, Irons — we not only take pride in our work's actual content, but we also take pride in the way it's presented. We strive to excel grammatically as well as factually. To that end, let it be noted that, here at Planet Fury, we do research. We do not make research.

I was being sarcastic, if anyone cared.

I just didn't have a 'rolls eyes' GIF handy.

As sarcasm is a part of all of our daily diets, that GIF really should be available.

(shakes head) Ah, I see that they did not read and heed the very helpful article that Heidi and I presented on this subject.

I wish this young lady luck, but the whole point of the Expendables is to showcase veteran action stars; so they overlook all of those we've mentioned in favor of a young beb....Natch):

You? Sarcastic? I wouldn't have believed it.

Fortunately, the big smile smiley is available.

Well, talk about another completely stupid idea...

According to the latest post from Cinema Blend, Sly has confirmed that The Expendables 2 is aiming for a PG-13 rating.

Okay, so the Internet is full of false rumors, half truths and outright lies. But if this pans out, it will likely be a big disappointment to the fans that made the original such a success. And I doubt it will draw in the standard PG-13 audience (boys age 16 to 25). I mean, do they even know of half the actors in the movie?
