"Death will be a great relief. No more interviews. - Katharine Hepburn"

It's 'Django Unchained' Versus 'The Lone Ranger' on Christmas 2012

The Weinstein Company has decided to pit Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained against Disney’s The Lone Ranger; both films have announced theatrical release dates of December 25, 2012.

Made obvious by its title, Django Unchained is an homage to Italy’s 'Spaghetti Westerns', including the original 1966 Django by Sergio Corbucci. Tarantino’s new film will tell the story of an escaped slave who becomes a bounty hunter and then goes on a mission to rescue his wife from a cruel and brutal slaveowner.

Big names are already in line to take part; Leonardo DiCaprio is likely to play the villainous slave master. There was some chatter of Will Smith playing the lead role, but his involvement has since waned (cough*thankfully*cough). Current nominees in talks are said to be Jamie Foxx, Idris Elba, and Chris Tucker. Our thoughts? Foxx and Tucker would be absolutely horrible. Idris Elba – who played Heimdall in the recent and quite fun Thor - is by far the best of these three names and would likely succeed in the role.

Other shoes will be likely filled by Christopher Waltz and Tarantino favorite Samuel L. Jackson (I’m surprised the latter hasn’t expressed interest in the title role, frankly - maybe he will yet?).

Oh my fucking god. Jamie Foxx? Umm, Chiwetel Ejiofor, people!

Idris Elba in a QT movie would be so bad-ass. He's British, you know. As is Chiwetel Ejiofor, another great black actor.

Maybe Eli Roth will play the plantation owner. Wink

Expect N-bombs (and mild controversy) to abound...

I just have to ask, is the Weinstein Company just plain crazy, or smarter than we give them credit for? I ask this because the conventional wisdom would be to give Disney the Christmas receipts and keep any hard R films (and as this is a Tarantino film, we all know it won't be no PG-13) away from family holidays. Yea, I've heard of studios banking on their film being the alternative to all the family oriented stuff out during the silly season, but how often has that really worked?

My research (a quick look at Box Office Mojo) showed only one R-rated film, Scream 2, that ranked in the top 25 December openings. Not exactly promising numbers, despite the Tarantino fanbase.

And I wonder if the Weinsteins have forgotten the pounding Grindhouse took on its Easter weekend release. While it was the perfect way for a horror geek like me to spend the holiday (yes, I saw it on Easter Sunday), I wonder how many people decided to spend the weekend in a more traditional manner. And, to be honest, had any of my family lived closer, I might have been coerced into spending time at their place and not the theaters.

Between opening on Christmas day and the availability of illegal downloading almost seconds after a film's release, the Weinstein Company might be playing a losing hand with this one. But it's still over a year away, and I'm betting the release date will change by then.

I was surprised this film got scheduled so far away. Tarantino was supposedly in such a hurry to shoot it, I thought it would premiere much sooner. So, I too bet the date is moved up.
