You know, whenever I open my mailbox and find a package of DVDs from Planet Fury, I throw up a little bit in my mouth. "Why?", you might ask. Because I know that, in among the really good flicks, there's going to be a really bad one. Not a "so bad it's good" flickershow. Those, I love. No...I mean really BAD.
And then there's A Darker Reality.
A Darker Reality follows the investigation of LAPD Detective Alex "Cold Steel" Belasco (Burns) and Dr. Jesse Metcalf (Doench) as they hunt for a serial killer known as "The Ghost" (Baldwin). Actually, the two of them spend a great deal of the time seeing who can overact more. And the "Maurice Evans Ham Award" for 2008 goes to...Daniel Baldwin! So that's where those excess pounds came from, eh, Danny? Chewing on all that scenery!
How do we take these characters seriously? Doench is supposed to be the FBI's "#1 profiler," a clinical psychologist...who comes to work dressed in a tube top.
Okay, I'm going to be honest with you all. This movie is so mind-numbingly awful, I could not even watch it in one sitting. I had to break it down into three sessions. I honestly have to ask, how the fuck did this crapulous waste of film stock get greenlighted? Is Daniel Baldwin so financially busted that he had to take a role this low?
A Darker Reality is torture porn, plain and simple. There's just enough plot to hold together the scenes of violence against women. Oh, and don't think you're going to see any quality gore FX here. I've seen better gore in Halloween haunted houses.
In all seriousness, everyone associated with A Darker Reality should be ashamed of themselves. It's that terrible on every count, from acting, to FX, to the camera work. Please, PLEASE, do yourself a favor and avoid A Darker Reality at all costs. Go rent Hostel. It's crap, too, but it's better-made crap.
