Sounds like typical Follywood thinking. "Hey, we've got a runaway success here. Now let's slash the budget and keep the money for ourselves.. The fan's won't notice."

And it's about time he made another feature film, so maybe that was a factor as well.

Yeah, he "left" the show in the last week or so, but the news is slowing emerging that it was not a friendly parting. (I had planned on writing a piece about this Monday — I hate it when news breaks and I'm out of pocket. |()

On a larger scale, this is symptomatic of other problems in the U.S. - success is often met with harsher economic and struggle for creative control consequences than mediocracy, in many ways no different than a successful business that gets trampled in the stock market because, while it's earnings were up, the earnings increase wasn't enough to satisfy market analysts who demand a round of cost cutting and layoffs.

Didn't Darabont fire all of his writers during the first season after the pilot aired so he could pay lower salaries to freelancers?

Correct me if I'm wrong. but I thought he did. In which case he's getting a taste of his own medicine.
