Television network The CW, home of such sensitive, insightful teen-centric shows as Gossip Girl and The Vampire Diaries, has — surprise! — ordered a teen-centric pilot about teen witches called Secret Circle…because the stars of The Craft are now, like, as old as the average CW viewer's parents and the film itself is now as old as the average CW viewer and, hey, doesn't every generation of teens deserve teen witches they can call their own?
Secret Circle, an hour-long drama based on a three-book young adult fantasy romance series from The Vampire Diaries author L. J. Smith, is being produced by Kevin Williamson, co-creator and executive producer of The Vampire Diaries series. If you're really old, you might also remember Williamson as creator of Scream, which reinvented horror for a previous generation of teens…who actually now are the average CW viewer's parents.
From what I can glean, Secret Circle tells the tale of Cassie, a shy California teen who moves to her mom's hometown of New Salem, leaving behind Adam, the boy of her dreams. As if that's not enough, Cassie discovers that she is a witch and part of a secret coven. As if that’s not enough, Cassie soon learns she's also the key that will unlock a centuries-old battle of good versus evil. Of course, there's a love triangle and a fellow coven member who totally hates Cassie and makes settling into her new secret social circle, like, hard and stuff.
I’m betting Secret Circle will do pretty well. It is perfectly tailored to its demographic and seems to have a little something for everyone. If the producers are smart, they'll make Adam a dreamy mixed-race rapper with crazy good martial arts skillz yo. The only problem I see is the show's title — The CW missed an opportunity to emphasize its network branding. I'm thinking something along the lines of Secret Gossip Witch Girl Diaries. Whaddya think? Too on the nose?
