A new trailer and a slew of images have been released for next summer's Cowboys and Aliens
The story is set in the wild old west, in a small town where conflict is boiling between settlers, outlaws, and Indians. The various factions find they must turn aside their grudges when they are suddenly faced with a common enemy - invaders from outer space!
Sounds like pretty silly stuff - which is one of the reasons I found this trailer so surprising. Watch it and see - the film is setup and acted pretty straight. I'm not seeing many, if any, signs of cheesy one-liners or any of the other things you might expect in a film about cowboys fighting invading extraterrestrials.
This is a good thing! Playing it straight will let any humor or absurdity come forward all on its own strength. After seeing this trailer, I'm beginning to look forward to seeing more of Cowboys and Aliens.
Cowboys and Aliens is directed by Jon Favreau and stars the likes of Olivia Wilde (yay 13!), Harrison Ford, Daniel Craig, and Sam Rockwell.

Apparently, this film is a totally straight Clint Eastwood-style genre western...plus aliens, though all preview crowds are laughing at the trailer, which troubles Jon Favreau and Universal. They are going to ramp up a campaign to set the record straight. Should be interesting to watch.

This is actually what I'm digging about it. I love that they are not camping it up with one-liners and cheese. It's probably going to have some funny moments - but the difference is that the characters in the film won't know they are being funny.
Another film that's a little in the same vein is James Gunns' Slither. The characters in that film also played it very straight, and it really helped in the humor and the fun of the film.
So, Harrison Ford is essentially playing Gene Hackman from Unforgiven, right? And Gene Hackman from The Quick and the Dead. And Gene Hackman from—hmm, maybe they should've hired Gene Hackman. I guess Gene Hackman is too old to play a Gene Hackman type. So Harrison Ford is now our go-to Hackman? We shall see.

Theron, you've got it all wrong. Harrison Ford is playing Paul Newman playing the role Gene Hackman said no too, except that Paul Newman is dead so Ford is playing Hackman playing Newman, which is why we're so confused.
May I just add - you know who they SHOULD have gotten? Clint Fucking Eastwood.
Ford is friends with Spielberg, though (God knows WHAT those two can find to fucking talk about except 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' - Ford used to beat up guys like Spielberg in high school) and as we all know, men in hollywood only hire their friends for jobs, regardless of whether they are good for the part or for the story or for the film itself. That's why we end up with shit like 'Knocked Up 2' and 'Little Fockers'. UGH.
All I know is, now that Hackman has retired, Newman has died and Eastwood doesn't need to work for anyone, someone has to be our new Gene Hackman, dammit!

Is this Yojimbo/A Fistful of Dollars, with aliens?
