'Clash of the Titans 2' Finds a Director

The sequel to the remake of Clash of the Titans is moving forward and has named a director - Jonathan Liebesman.

My gut reaction to any sequel to the 2010 film (and it's hard to believe it was a 2010 film - it was so forgettable that I would have pegged it at 2008) is a long and heart felt slow-motion "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO". The 2010 Clash of the Titans had moments of pretty-shiny but was weighed down by mid-rate CGI, thinner-than-the-original characters, and a stupid plot.

I remember first hearing about the 1981 film as a kid, and being annoyed that they diverged so much from the original myths. There wasn't a silly Kraken in the old Greek myth, and so much of the other stuff was just invented; however, Ray Harryhausen's awesome stop-motion animation made it all better. Then 2010 rolled around, and I was annoyed all over again that they diverged so much from the divergences they invented in the first one, and this time there wasn't any Harryhausen goodness to brighten it up for me. This next installment, which isn't a remake of anything as there never was a sequel to the 1981 original - well, I just shudder to think what they'll toss onto the heap this go around.

With films such as The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning and Darkness Falls under his directorial belt, Jonathan Liebesman seems like the perfect man to make a really bad sequel. Liebesman is also behind the 2011 film Battle: Los Angeles, which should serve as a semi-reliable early indicator of the quality of Clash of the Titans 2.

Sam Worthington will be returning as Perseus. There isn't a release date set for Clash of the Titans 2 as of yet - we'll report as we hear more!

Yeah TCM sucked as well. I've seen a few people here and there mentioning they liked Darkness Falls recently. I'm going to watch it again before I email you Bigmac. I can only vaguely remember things that I didn't like about but I was very sure of my opinion that it was one of the worst. I'd try to look up my initial reactions to it but Creature Corner got destroyed when Johnny and Ryan left and I'm pretty sure they didn't waste any time dumping the entire database.

Whenever you get to it, RAN, I'm in no hurry. I'm really interested in what you think of it.

Besides, if you've noticed some of my other posts, I tend to enjoy cinematic crap. Let's be honest, anyone who will loves House of the Dead and is breathlessly anticipated the release of Sharktopus has a pretty high tolerance for sleaze. Smile

PS: Just so you don't think my tastes are TOO low, I gave up on the TMC remakes after the first one. In the first 10 minutes, I was screaming, "Where the hell did she hide that hand cannon," and things went downhill from there. I do have some standard.

Maybe this time they'll actually shoot it for 3D, instead of shoehorning it in. Aw, who am I kidding, that's exactly what they're going to do.

And I hope Perseus gets killed by Kratos in this one.

Liebsman's a hack, but he did direct that quite decent short film RINGS, which bridged THE RING and its terrible sequel.

Hey RAN. Please understand, I am not questioning your opinion of Darkness Falls, as I know I am in the minority. But I am interested in your reasons for hating the film so much. Most of the posts I've read express disgust for the film, but they don't often include reasons for such statements.

I know you only saw it once, but if you remember any of your reasons for not liking it, I would love to hear them. So we don't derail this thread, you can email me at shadowoverportland@live.com if you like. Just put Darkness Falls as the subject matter, so I don't assume it's spam. Smile

And, while I have yet to see the current version of Clash, I have to agree. I suspect the sequel will suck at a level unseen since Van Helsing.

I've always thought Darkness Falls was one of the worst horror films ever made. I've only seen it once though. Clash of the Titans is still very fresh in mind and I can say for sure that it was a horrible movie. Perseus never speaks, not that I want to hear Sam Worthington, and there is no plot or story whatsoever. It seemed like they somehow managed to make the movie as long as the original while removing everything but the action sequences. The CGI and creature design was horrible. Except maybe for the Kraken.

I expect the sequel to be even worse which is kind of unfathomable but I have faith.

I enjoyed Darkness Falls for all it's silliness. It was a straight up shocker type horror film that remains a guilty pleasure of mine. The CGI was acceptable, as most of it was quick and shadowy so you couldn't really see it, the villain was interesting and the Stan Winston effects were very nice.

Yea, it riffed a bit off of Nightmare on Elm Street, but some of the scenes were the potential victims were trying to stay in the light worked quite well, the cast was okay (no one really embarrassed themselves) and the film moved at a quick enough pace that you didn't have time to see all the plot holes until after the credits rolled.

That said, it's not enough to get me to watch this sequel.
