The Cabin in the Woods, Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard's oft-postponed satirical horror comedy, looks to be set for release…again. No, really! In fact, there's even a poster and release date to prove it. Of course, there've been plenty of past posters and promises, so color me dubious.
Lionsgate, which acquired The Cabin in the Woods following MGM's bankruptcy, has been having problems of its own recently, and Whedon and Goddard's little flick lost might just be the thing the studio needs to brighten its future.
Shot back in 2009, Cabin was produced by Whedon, directed by Goddard and stars Bradley Whitford, Richard Jenkins, Amy Acker and a pre-Thor Chris Hemsworth. Lionsgate is positioning it for an April 13, 2012, release and I imagine it'll probably actually truly make it to theaters this time.
Lionsgate needs something that has a chance of being a hit, and anything connected to the high-grossing Thor and the director of Marvel's upcoming superhero-stuffed Avengers flick probably looks pretty good to a studio that lost $24.6 million in its second quarter, mainly because of the poor performance of its films.
If nothing else, this new poster looks pretty cool. Check it out: a puzzle house! I wonder if this is Whedon's clever comment on the conundrum that is today’s housing market Nah, probably not.
If they actually release a trailer within the next three months I may pass out.
