Brett Ratner Is Out as Oscar Producer

Oh that Brett Ratner.

Earlier this year, Ratner signed on to co-produce the Academy Awards and enlisted his buddy Eddie Murphy to act as host. This was considered a coup for the Oscar telecast, mostly because Murphy is being seen as an ideal choice as emcee.

But now, Ratner is out. Well, actually, he resigned after an uproar over comments he made recently while promoting his latest film, Tower Heist (which, by the way, is not stealing much cash at the box office).

First, there was Ratner's appearance on G4's Attack of the Show where he discussed his relationship with former Attack of the Show co-host Olivia Munn, saying, "I used to date Olivia Munn, I'll be honest with everyone here. But when she was 'Lisa.' She wasn't Asian back then. She was hanging out on my set of After the Sunset, I banged her a few times, but I forgot her."

Then, a few days later, Ratner attended a screening of Tower Heist at L.A.'s Arclight Cinemas and revealed during a Q&A session that he doesn't care for preparation while filming, artist that he is. Waving his hand, Ratner stated dismissively, "Rehearsal is for fags."

That's not the thing one wants to hear from the producer of the Academy Awards, a show that is not only a live telecast watched by tens of millions of people, but also a show that is a major production that could fall apart at any moment in front of tens of millions of people.

It's also a program that is eager to be perceived as relevant to an increasingly disinterested audience of young people and remain significant to its core constituency of artists, many of whom are gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered.

So, now, Ratner has taken responsibility for his words and has resigned from his post as Oscar producer, saying, "Over the last few days, I've gotten a well-deserved earful from many of the people I admire most in this industry expressing their outrage and disappointment over the hurtful and stupid things I said in a number of recent media appearances. To them, and to everyone I've hurt and offended, I'd like to apologize publicly and unreservedly."

You can read his surprisingly eloquent statement HERE at Deadline.

When I first heard about these incidents, I didn't think much about them because, hey, it's just Brett Ratner being Brett Ratner. Boorishness is his state of being. These statements were just par for the Ratner course — but, apparently, the Ratner course has gotten harder to play.

Ratner is now taking the first steps toward public redemption by partnering with the gay media watchdog group GLAAD, who has stated it is working with Ratner "to convene public discussions featuring leaders in the entertainment industry about promoting fair and accurate inclusions of LGBT people and stories."

Oh, in case you're curious, Ratner has also apologized to Olivia Munn, saying he lied about "banging" her. He told noted truth magnet Howard Stern that Munn is "actually talented . . . the problem is I made her look like she's a whore." That's an apology, right? Don't feel too bad for Munn. She's received a little press out of this whole fiasco, so she's probably cool.

(Now that you know what happened, isn't the title of this article just hilarious?)

UPDATE:

Eddie Murphy has resigned as host of the Academy Awards. In a statement today, Murphy said, "First and foremost I want to say that I completely understand and support each party's decision with regard to a change of producers for this year's Academy Awards ceremony . . . I was truly looking forward to being a part of the show that our production team and writers were just starting to develop, but I'm sure that the new production team and host will do an equally great job."

Thanks, Brett Ratner!

The Olivia Munn thing is interesting. When I read her book it took me all of four and-a-half seconds to realise that Ratner was the 'mystery director' she was talking about. But her angle on the whole situation was that she was repulsed by him, even commiserating with Ratner's date one night, who had to put up with his insults and boorish behaviour.

At no point does she indicate that he 'banged' her. So if what Ratner says about her is is true (and he's too smug and infantile to lie about something like that) then it confirms what a lot of us have always suspected, that Olivia Munn is just another opportunistic Hollywood starlet willing to screw anyone on the off-chance that it will advance her career. Even a slimy cretin like Brett Ratner.

I am pretty sure Ratner lies about a lot of women he has "banged". Truth does not really appear to be his forte.

Perhaps. I guess that's just the entitled rich kid/frat bro in him.

On Howard Stern, he bragged about banging Lindsay Lohan, even saying he made her take an STD test first. "I'm a hypochondriac," Ratner told Stern. "Before I go all the way, I send the girl to the doctor and check them for everything. My doctor has a test to tell if you're going to catch something in the future even."

Brett Ratner's doctor is better than your doctor.

He's admitted now that he lied about sleeping with her:

You know is it me or has he lost weight? Because I always thought he was huge especially back in the "Red Dragon" era. Still looks like an asshole. Thanks for fucking up X-Men 3 dickhead!

Well, he calls her talented so you already know he's talking out of his ass.

In the end I don't think Ratner is prejudiced or homophobic. He's a bro and they tend have a very limited (and sometimes unfortunate) way of expressing themselves. Usually involving the three words 'fag', 'pussy' and 'bitch.

Ratner plans a remake of The Last American Virgin; as an autobiographical piece, per chance?

You know, if he'd said, "Rehearsing is for pussies," none of this would've happened.

Excellent point; and few on the net are really making a big deal out of the fact that he lied about his relationship with Olivia Munn. Don't get me wrong, he should be held accountable for the homophobic slur; but once again, the blatant sexism is overlooked.

Who lies about banging Olivia Munn?

I got so hyped when I saw the headline "Eddie Murphy is Out!" I was like, finally! Alas, he is remaining in the closet. Backing out over this faux pas is the cherry on the homophobic-gay-denial cake.

On a different note, shouldn't there be a very clear distinction between using a slur as part of a shifted cultural term, and using a slur as hate speech against a member of the group the slur was originally associated with? I don't think he should have said it, and I hate the cultural use of "fag" and "gay" and "pussy" and all the rest of it, but I get a bit annoyed when people say someone said a racist/sexist/homophobic slur, which makes me think he actually called a gay person that name, when they didn't. It ends up muddying any complex discussion on the subject.

This is what I would have said had I bothered to discuss it intelligently...so kudos. So, Ratner's use of "gay" wasn't a direct slur, but probably carried with it the general notion that gays are inferior. At least, that's where it originated from. I think you can differentiate between a "direct slur" and an "indirect slur".
