In a surprising turn of events, Darth Maul the former apprentice to the Dark Sith lord, Darth Sidious, has been spotted in the trailer for the upcoming horror film Insidious. Is it a coincidence that Darth Sidious' apprentice is seen in the trailer for Insidious? I think not.
After being cut in half by the lightsaber of Obi-Wan Kenobi, Darth Maul fell into a reactor chasm apparently to his death. According to sources close to Kenobi, the fight also claimed the life of Jedi Knight Qui-Gon Jinn, the man responsible for the eventual extinction of Jedi Knights and the collapse of the Republic.
In the full trailer for Insidious, a family is overcome by a large number of evil spirits invading their home. After seeking help in the form of a psychic, the family learns that it is not the house that is haunted--it is their son. Close to the end of the trailer, a black and red faced man with what can only be described as "evil eyes" is seen behind Patrick Wilson's character. According to experts this is none other than Dark Maul, whose lost soul apparently travelled through time to end up haunting a small boy.
Okay joke over. But seriously, isn't that weird? This is perhaps one of my biggest pet peeves about the creators of Saw and their willingness to use what looks like overly CGI-ed people in their films. Why is that scarier, than someone with a scary face and a good make up job? Why? Even if Insidious is creepy and atmospheric, it loses huge points in my book because it insists on employing these overly video-game ish looking bad guys. A ghost story doesn't need this!
Granted, this trailer looks much more convincing than the teaser trailer we saw about a month ago but still--these quick glimpses of the bad guys leave me feeling less than thrilled. It looks laughable. What happened to atmosphere, and subtlety?
I'm sure I will still end up seeing Insidious and I might even like it but for now, I remain dubious about the fancy CGI used to make people "scarier".
You know, did you get a load of the size of that house? How old is that couple - in their mid thirties, maybe?
Who the fuck lives in a giant mansion these days when wifey stays at home and hubby is only 35? Did they inherit a bunch of money? Are the filmmakers so clueless as to how non-directors live? James Wan and Leigh Whannell may live in The Hollywood Hills in a 5 bedroom house, but regular folks live in small apartments and tiny houses that are gross.
Seriously. Are they in Wisconsin or something? Cause I need to live there.
These people should just be thankful they have such a nice house and stop complaining.
Maybe they live in Detroit. Ten years ago or so, somebody bought the Pontiac Silverdome for $550,000. Seriously. That'll MAYBE get you a shitty condo in Manhattan.
White people in Hollywood movies always seem to live in some great house/apartment in an expensive area, despite having a "regular" job. You can't have it both ways.
Also, I think it's creepy when it matches more closely to reported ghost sightings, like a previous tenant ghost who's just hanging out, or is living out their death. Not that I necessarily believe in ghosts, but I find them interesting. What I don't find interesting are CGI figures that pop into frame and mug menacingly towards the camera.
Wisconsin wouldn't be too bad if there weren't so many Packer fans there. They have a bunch of really cool museums, like a Civil War museum, in Kenosha that are either free or only a couple of bucks. The little museum of natural history shows monster movies every Saturday. Last time I was there I watched It Came From Beneath the Sea.
I wouldn't be surprised if George Lucas was the killer. He killed my childhood anyway might as well take my friggen life at this point. Darth Maul was one of the few good things about the Star Wars prequels and he was only on screen for like 5 minutes total and got killed in under 3. Lame! But then Boba Fett was always one of the coolest characters and he didn't do anything either.

Obvious jump cut scares are bad enough (it's what ruined The Crazies remake for me), but adding CGI effects in the mix is just a sign of filmmaker laziness.
