'The Avengers' Launches its Trailer

The new trailer for Marvel's The Avengers is out, and it does look like things are coming together nicely.

The trailer lays out the synopsis that many of us already know: Loki has returned to Earth and is looking to give Thor — and the rest of the planet — a good and godly thrashing.

Thankfully, Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) has been hard at work recruiting for S.H.I.E.L.D., a shadowy organization which tasks itself with defending against extra special threats. Making up the team is Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Captain America (Chris Evans), Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner).

The previous "solo" films that built up many of these heroes were surprisingly good. The Avengers is the pinnacle of the entire effort; it is bringing all of these superheroes together in one place for one giant battle. It may result in a pretty busy film — having so many personalities buzzing around may be difficult to juggle — but there is a lot of talent behind this film, and it's beginning to feel like they are on the right path.

The trailer looks great. It appears to follow the steps of all the previous films, lots of action with sprinkles of light humor to break it all up. The Marvel superhero films haven't always taken themselves completely seriously, but they take themselves just seriously enough. Thor was especially brilliant in walking a thin line between clever self-aware humor and outright parody.

The Avengers is directed by Joss Whedon and is planned to hit theaters on May 4, 2012. Needless to say, this film will be one of the big things of that summer. Check out the trailer and share your thoughts with a comment below!

Most superhero flicks are burdened with too many villains. This one has the opposite problem, but this is an issue familiar to comic book fans. I think the trailer is pretty freaking cool. So, I'm going to allow myself to get excited. Yeah, yeah, I know — I already usually allow myself to get excited...but this time, I don't feel that bad about it. Extra points for Black Widow's "I'll strike a pose because I'm supercool" pose and for Thor's self-aware, smirking chuckle.
