How was your weekend? Well, no matter how good yours was, it's safe to say a better one was had by American Mary, the stunning new film from Canadian horrormeisters Jen and Sylvia Soska.
Hot off a triumphant U.S. premiere at Austin's Fantastic Fest, the Twisted Twins' twisted revenge thriller took the advice of Horace Greeley and headed west in search of success and found it in the sunny, smoggy climes of Hollywood.
American Mary began its wonderful weekend by being picked up by Anchor Bay for Canadian distribution after it played at the Toronto After Dark Film Festival, which follows a European distribution deal signed in August with Universal Pictures International. Can an American American Mary deal be far behind?
The Soskas' fortunes continued to rise at L.A.'s prestigious Screamfest Horror Film Festival, where American Mary dominated, picking up statues for Best Picture, Best Director(s), Best Cinematography, Best Make-up and Best Actress, an honor that went to Katharine Isabelle for her exceptional performance as fallen med student Mary Mason.
Oh, that reminds me. Speaking of American Mary, check back next week for a very special All Hallow's Eve here at Planet Fury, when our Halloween Memories series returns with a focus on the Great White North. Look for spooky reminiscences from a couple of rising Canadian indie horror personalities as well as an insane exclusive interview with the wild women of American Mary.
