AFI Agrees With FGT in 2010

The American Film Institute has announced the winners of the 2010 AFI Awards, and we’re thrilled that several of the selections are genre-related and/or female-centric pieces that FanGirlTastic has also been excited about. Nice job, AFI! Your taste is exquisite this year.

Among the films and television programs chosen for 2010 are Black Swan, Inception, True Grit, Winter’s Bone, Temple Grandin, 30 Rock, The Big C and The Walking Dead.

In fact, everything chosen this year is above reproach, unlike past selections like Knocked Up, Borat and Big Bang Theory — not that they don’t have their charms but, come on. The American Film Institute awards the best of the best, and while Knocked Up and Big Bang Theory might be a perfectly pleasant way to kill some time, they’re no Black Swan or The Wrestler even. (FYI, 2008’s The Wrestler was an AFI Award selection as was 2000’s Requiem for a Dream.) Hmm, Darren Aronofsky seems to have the AFI’s number. I wonder how they’ll feel about The Wolverine, his upcoming dive into the Marvel comic book pond. I’m predicting they’ll love it. They loved Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight in 2008 — but, hey, who didn’t?

Good stuff. Aronofsky is difficult to pin down and he gets positively mullered in places like the Hollywood Reporter and the Times, so it's nice to see AFI give him some love.

Yeah, he's a prestige intellectual filmmaker, like the Coen bros. and Christopher Nolan. They're almost guaranteed to get a nod...but they make great films, so... Can't argue with quality. But it's interesting that all these guys love genre, much like Tarantino. But they all make "thinking man's" genre pieces. God bless 'em.

It's almost shocking to see such a list. Aronofsky is truly brilliant and I have been consistently blown away by everything he has done since Pi which immediately became my favorite indy film when it was released. I also enjoyed his screenplay for Below quite a bit.

Christopher Nolan might be even more brilliant. I was blown away by Inception, picked up the Blu-ray with the working script, and after seeing that got home and watched Memento. He can do no wrong.

The Coen brothers as well. I'm pretty sure True Grit is going to live up to the hype and probably exceed it with everything I've been reading about it. I love America and apple pie but The Duke was never a favorite.

I went to see the Duke's True Grit when I was a little kid. It stuck as one of the first "grownup" flicks I ever saw (followed soon after with Bonnie & Clyde), so it's a sentimental favorite. I can't wait to see the new one.
