Same as It Ever Was – 84th Annual Academy Awards Trailer

After last year's attempt to pull in younger viewers by using hosts James Franco and Anne Hathaway as bait went terribly, terribly wrong, the producers of the Academy Awards struck gold. They snagged comic genius Eddie Murphy as host. Then that too went terribly, terribly wrong.

At that point, everyone apparently just threw up their hands and said, "Fuck it, get Billy Crystal. He'll host anything." So that's what they did.

Now, the producers have released a trailer for the upcoming 84th Academy Awards show, giving us a peek into the tenor of this year's ceremony. And guess what: It's feeling a lot like the previous eight times Crystal hosted.

Employing Funny or Die to make this trailer proves Oscar is still fighting to appear relevant…but the use of second-tier talent such as Josh Duhamel, Vinnie Jones and Megan Fox indicates he's still not sure how to go about it. Let's be frank, Oscar will never be too hip for the room. But he's not supposed to be. A good host never shows up his guests, especially when they are the cream of the Hollywood crop. The sooner Oscar realizes this, the better.

So, this year's broadcast might be dull. It might be predictable. It might even be boring. In any case, it certainly won't be as bad as last year's misfire, in which Hathaway tried to make up for Franco's very Franco-osity by becoming shriller and more eager to please with each passing moment. She was trying to be a good host, really she was. But, as the ceremony's producers have now been forced to appreciate, it might've been best to just put out a platter of Billy Crystal and let the party take care of itself.
