The Other Dracula Story - 'Vlad Dracula' to Creep Onto Starz

While NBC is in for a season of Dracula, Starz has announced their own new series, Vlad Dracula.

Babylon 5 creator J. Michael Straczynski has partnered with Roy Lee (The Ring) with the task of writing the script, which bodes very well. The Ring was certainly entertaining, and Babylon 5 was outright epic.

The show itself sounds a good deal less conventional than its NBC counterpart. Vlad Dracula is taking the less traveled route of following the story from its very beginning. This is more a prequel to Bram Stoker's classic book than anything else. The new series will take place in the 15th century, when Vlad Tepes was very much human. The show will follow the reign - and decline - of the leader as he struggles to retain control over his kingdom, as well as his personal affairs.

This new Starz series has the storytelling power of Straczynski and Lee behind it, is on a channel that doesn't mind having boobs and blood (ahhhh, Spartacus, I miss you), and is from the unorthodox perspective of the man's life before he was a monster. This all sums to a potentially excellent new televised series.

This project is in an early state of development and no further cast or crew has been announced. We'll report more as it is revealed!

Neither of us wrote about the possible new Eli Roth film with Russell Crowe as Dracula. Grin

Bram Stoker's Dracula was believed to be based on a woman, not Vlad the Impaler. If you jumped to "Elizabeth Bathory" as your answer, there is now another female Dracula.

A 2007 Smithsonian documentary called The Vampire Princess suggests that Stoker used Eleonore von Schwarzenberg as his inspiration for Dracula. She even kept wolves in cages and milked them, drinking the milk was an old folk remedy for women who had trouble getting pregnant.

Therefore, what I shall tell of the earlier period, believe; and to what I may relate of the later time, give only such credit as may seem due, or doubt it altogether, or, if doubt it ye cannot, then play unto its riddle the Oedipus. Well he did use some of Vlad's life, but also used a LOT of Elizabeth Bathory. Man that woman was fucked, and I wish I could see a cool movie about her. I heard the Julie Delpy movie was kind of meh, not sure about the others. Wasn't there some news about Tilda Swinton playing her in another adaption?

I have no idea, but the link between Eleonore and Dracula is in a deleted opening scene from the book where there is a vampire attack at the tomb of an Austrian princess. Nobody knows for sure who he was referencing, there are many different theories. It's just whoever you prefer.

Man I read that and I was like wtf? lol eh you know I could buy maybe a regular vampire in "modern times" but as Dracula? Ugh no. Johnathan Rys-Meyers has a pretty good look and has had some success playing regal roles. Not sure if I want to watch Drac on network TV though.

Too bad I don't have starz anymore :/ Oh well I guess when I get finally netflix set up I can watch it than. I hope they pick someone good for that.

Yeah, I was a bit taken aback by that news. I thought "This will be the first Dracula that eats Chicko Rolls and smokes Winnie Blues..." (Australian references there. Sorry. Wink )

Mind you, Gary Oldman seemed like an odd choice for Dracula and I thought he was spectacular in the role.

Man he was so good in that role I need to watch it later tonight maybe. Been thinking about that movie. God I can't stand Kenu in that movie, and Winona is kind of meh and both of their accents are kind of hilarious.

Yeah, Coppola's DRACULA is all over the shop. Keanu has the worst British accent in the history of cinema and we get yet another typically poor performance from Winona Ryder. She's a shitty actress, I've always said it.
