The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences — the most prestigious group from which to receive meaningless awards for what are highly subjective cinematic efforts — has formally announced its 83rd annual Academy Award nominations. I say "formally" because everyone already pretty much knew what to expect.

We think actress Jennifer Lawrence deserves an Oscar for her role in Debra Granik's thriller Winter's Bone. And the Palm Springs International Film Festival agrees. They'll be presenting her with the Rising Star Award at the 2011 fest.

Debra Granik's thriller 'Winter's Bone' gets release date

Winter's Bone, recipient of the 2010 Sundance Film Festival’s Dramatic Competition Grand Jury Prize: Dramatic and the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award, will get a June 2010 release from Roadside Attractions. This thriller (based on the novel by Daniel Woodrell) was directed by Debra Granik (Down to the Bone) and adapted for the screen by Granik and Anne Rosellini.

17 year-old Ree Dolly (Jennifer Lawrence) sets out to track down her father, who put their house up for his bail bond and then disappeared...
