Halloween Horror Nights Scary Film Competition - might we endorse a short?

We think you should vote for "Jasper" by Elizabeth B. Schieffer.

Why? Because she's not only the ONLY chick director in the entire finalist list, but her short features a lead female in a very unorthodox role that asks us to ignore our common assumptions about horror film cliches. And we love it.

Clocking in at only 3 minutes, this is an awesome little bit of innovation.

Of course, you should vote for whoever the fuck you want. But WE think... yeah, you know what we think. Your vote will help determine the winner of the Halloween Horror Nights Scary Film Competition.

The top 10 Finalists were selected by a panel of industry judges that included Rob Zombie, Marc Graser (Senior Writer, Variety), John Murdy (Creative Director, Universal Studios Hollywood / "Halloween Horror Nights") and Matt Cowan (Getty Images and former short film juror for the Sundance Film Festival, AFI Film Festival.)

Vote for your favorite horror short at the site. The winning filmmaker will win two tickets to Halloween Horror Nights 2010, an exclusive invitation to the opening night "Eyegore Awards" ceremony and $1,000 cash prize. Lizzie deserves it.

This is in the press release Universal sent us about it:

Quote:

“Jasper,” submitted by Elizabeth Schieffer of Dallas, Texas, was selected as this year’s winner by Internet voters who picked their favorite among a field of ten finalist films.

Prospective filmmakers were invited to submit short films up to three minutes in length. The panel of horror industry professionals, which included Zombie, Marc Graser (Senior Writer, Variety), John Murdy (Creative Director, Universal Studios Hollywood / "Halloween Horror Nights") and Matt Cowan (Getty Images editor and former juror for the Sundance Film Festival ) narrowed the field to ten.

“I have been huge fan of Rob Zombie’s work for a long time. Just to be able to get a project that I personally worked on to be seen by his eyes is a great honor,” said Schieffer. “I feel Zombie has brought something new to the horror genre with House of 1000 Corpses and the Halloween series. I hope that one day, I will be able to do the same. “

Jasper will be rewarded with a premiere showing on Chiller TV, a posting on SyFy.com, a $1,000 cash prize and Schieffer earns a trip for two to the opening night of Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Hollywood.

Congrats to her! I hope in some small way we helped.

Hmm! You must have gotten the original link through Facebook. Networked blogs has the odd habit of dominating the URL and showing a 'window' of the website.

The URL of the site itself is http://www.fangirltastic.com.

If I misunderstood your question let me know Wink

that is perfect, thanks!

You would lose that bet. I do intend to come back. As I explained to Tristan, my friends are idiots and took the whole "help me promote" thing way to far. And I am an even bigger idiot by giving them the means to do so. I have no excuse other than I am clearly retarded and need to pick who I choose to "help me" with more discretion.

Like I said, I do intend to come back as I am a fan of yours and anything horror. However, I cannot seem to find the address to this site other than http://networkedblogs.com/7vIvU which just seems incorrect.

Thanks man I'm feeling the love. I know what's wrong actually. I have a couple of viruses that are wreaking havoc on my ability to play video. It's been gone for the last 2 weeks getting the power connector replaced, they didn't need to replace the entire motherboard. Tomorrow I'm gonna watch the movies Heidi sent me and work on that and then I'm gonna wipe the entire thing and pick up better anti-virus software. I hate viruses.

Look at the bottom - it's not immediately obvious. You can click on each video and watch it in their little viewer.

Why are you doing this?!!

Because I don't like shills who come to our site and talk to us like we are easily manipulated idiots. I don't even like it when I see them doing it in other forums; which you have been doing.

Here you are in the Horror forums, talking with yourself:

http://www.horrorforum.com/showthread.php?p=230405

I'm sure you'll try to say "Those aren't me!", but then, of course, we'll wonder why your "JimDoug" account is registered with a "fleshchips@yahoo.com". Of course you are fleshchips in that horrorforum thread. You are also hackmetopieces. You are faking a conversation with yourself in order to promote your own film. It's pathetic.

Here you are at Bloody Disgusting, shilling their site as well:

http://www.bloody-disgusting.com/news/21541#160673

There you are Bleedout. There you are hackmetopieces. Two accounts by the same user, you, talking to one another and gushing over your own movie.

Here you are again at Bloody Disgusting:

http://www.bloody-disgusting.com/forums/showthread.php?t=56603

Here you are yet again at Bloody Disgusting:

http://www.bloody-disgusting.com/forums/showthread.php?p=2089288

So, when you ask "Why are you doing this", I ask a similar question of you, Jason Karten. Why have you chosen to shill? It has brought your film no service. You have garnered no additional fans. By employing shilling, you have treated every horror fan as if they are an easily manipulated idiot.

Protip: the best thing you could do is cop, apologize, move on, and never do it again. Blustering innocence in the face of identical IP's, identical email addresses, and other assorted circumstantial evidence is futile.

I just went there. That shit is AMAZING! people are fighting over it. Honestly whatever your name is, I had nothing to do with it but it is pretty amazing that someone is going to all that trouble. Its like I have a bunch of really angry publicists.

The Youtube page with your video is also interesting.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vJcVFB2R-rY

It has five comments. Four of those comments, from four different Youtube accounts, are absolutely glowing.

All four of those Youtube accounts were created between Sept 9 and Sept 10.

All four of those Youtube accounts also posted on every one of your competitor's videos and were consistently negative towards them - sometimes very much so. I think "bashing" is a good word to use.

All four of those Youtube accounts have never uploaded a video of their own, nor have they ever commented on any video that is not part of the competition. In fact, I think it is very reasonable to suggest that every one of the four accounts was created solely to comment on the competition.

Why are you doing this?!! I have no idea what you are talking about! I did not even know the youtube page was up yet. I emailed the girl about it at universal yesterday to find the status of it. I honestly wish I had the time to upload a bunch of youtube videos under different accounts but I don't. I don't even know how to upload a video on there for Christs sake.

You are the one who is "bashing" - blaming me for shit I don't even know about. Next you are going to say I am rigging the contest. My film is not even going to win! It does not even have a story. If people want to go on there and bash peoples films and not mine I have no control over it.

But if you are determined to think that I am this devious person uploading videos that bash the other peoples movies go ahead. There is obviously nothing I can do to change your mind. Because clearly being nice and honest doesn't work.

If you don't like me or the film just come right out and say it. Keep trying to be a fucking detective if you want. It is honestly starting to get weird though. Please don't show up at my house and take pictures or start stalking me.

It indeed would be slim. Very slim. My coworker posted the first comment. I was there when she did it obviously. Not trying to hide anything. Didn't you notice that the posts were made back to back in about 15 min? My comment was sarcasm hence the "OMG" & "Made my day" (I am not on Gossip Girl and I don't talk like that.) I was embarrassed enough that she wrote that and I felt the need to poke fun at it. The last thing I want is people thinking what you are thinking. She was trying to be nice but I knew that people would recognize her username and draw the same conclusions that you did. It was a lose lose for me.

I would never bash ANYONE elses films. It is hard enough to get respect making the types of films I do.

But I digress... think what you want. I don't mind. I do object to you posting the IP address of this computer. That seems wrong.

Tristan Sinns's picture

The world is so amazing. What would be the chance that someone might compliment some guy's movie, and then moments later that guy who made the movie shows up and says "Wow! You complimented my movie!" It just warms the heart.

Then, what is the chance that both of those posters have the exact same IP address of 96.251.83.12! I mean! WOW! It would have to be like, one in a gabillion! Unless, of course, they were the same poster using two accounts in order to mimic conversation between two people so that they may unethically shill their own film.

Thanks for joining the site, Jim Doug! Good luck in the contest.

Thank you. I hope you all enjoy my film. And a side note - I have been getting some criticism from people saying that it propagates violence towards women. It could not be further from the truth. I just wanted to make something fast-paced, bloody and not boring. It is actually based on a real woman who was reporting to the authorities that her boyfriend was abusing her/cutting her and it turns out that she was doing it to herself (actually believing her boyfriend was doing it.) She was later institutionalized. Sad story but scary in the fact of what the human mind is capable of.

Thank you everyone that is voting for it. My mother is going to be so proud if I win! She votes every day. It is quite cute.

Jim

I think this is true with a lot of archetypes and story structures. Many people haven't heard of Campbell's 'Hero's Journey' either, but if you start going over some of its beats they'll realize they recognize the pattern.

Though, I suppose that's the entire point of archetypes and structures - they are there, always there, and are just waiting to be identified. Wink

GhostontheNet's picture

To be sure, at least in the sense of archetypes, which is to say at a conscious level they are ignorant of it, but at an unconscious level they are intimately familiar. Who hasn't heard of Hansel and Gretel, where a hostile crone figure ensnares the protagonists with a house full of sweets, or Red Riding Hood, where the boundary between the wise crone and the predatory wolf are blurred? As documented by Joseph Campbell, the hero's journey often begins with the encounter with the crone, who will either lend her support with wisdom and magic, or violently oppose him/her. Even Frau Blucher of your avatar fits this pattern, skillfully provoking young Dr. Frankenstein to continue his father's work while mysteriously spooking the horses. In the case of Jaspar, the crone travels the streets in search of unworthy quests to bring to a violently abrupt end.

OMG! Suffering in Ecstasy is MY movie! Thank you SO much for the kind words! Made my day!

"Suffering in Ecstasy" blew my mind! I love that it had no dialogue. I found a lot of the other films sorta boring (they are 3 minutes long and I wanted to fast forward!) Seemed like they were trying to hard to build suspense in under 3 minutes - a MAJOR and typical film school mentality mistake. Jasper was okay but it reminded me too much of the witch in Drag me to Hell and I felt like I have seen it all before. Suffering in Ecstasy is just like a fun bloody ride. It was the only one that really stood out as being original. I really think it deserves to win.

Chris McMillan's picture

Watched them all and voted for Jasper. The only other one that was close (IMO) was the one about Mr. Wednesday, but that fell apart at the end.

Jasper had a Trick 'r Treat vibe to it. Well lit and stylishly directed, it captured the mood of a Halloween story well. And, while you knew what was coming, the actress really sold the part. Great little film.

Superheidi's picture

Most people are ignorant of it, and most horror films are, too, (Of course, there are a few exceptions)so it is cool to see one that exploits it! It gives different actresses some fun roles instead of the same monotonous characters all the same age over and over again.

GhostontheNet's picture

Ha, I saw that one coming from frame one! But then, I'm familiar with the role of the crone figure in fairy tale and myth, so I have a decided advantage.
